Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) replaces estrogen, often with a progestogen, to treat menopause symptoms; testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) treats diagnosed low testosterone in men.
Who seeks hormone care in New York
About one in six New York City residents (16.6%) is 65 or older [2], and in Westchester County the share is 19.7% [3]. The Menopause Society defines menopause as 12 months without a period, at an average age of 52 [6]. FDA labeling now recommends starting systemic HRT within 10 years of menopause onset or before age 60, with timing left to the patient and prescriber [7].

Checking a clinic before you book
New York splits oversight: the State Education Department's Office of the Professions licenses physicians, and the Department of Health's Office of Professional Medical Conduct handles discipline [4]. Look up any prescriber before paying a membership.
Under New York Education Law 6530(18) and (19), it is professional misconduct for a licensee to pay or receive a fee for patient referrals or to share fees with people not allowed to share them [5]. A clinic that pays per referral is a warning sign.
The city's large systems, NYU Langone Health, Mount Sinai and NewYork-Presbyterian, all have gynecology and urology departments. We did not confirm a dedicated menopause or TRT program page for any of them.

Bioidentical and pellet offers
Many Manhattan clinics advertise compounded bioidentical hormones or pellets. The National Academies found insufficient evidence for the clinical utility of compounded bioidentical hormone therapy and said its use should be limited to people who cannot use an FDA-approved product [10]. Compounded versions are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [14]. See bioidentical hormones and pellet costs.
Men and testosterone
The American Urological Association uses a total testosterone below 300 ng/dL on two tests, plus symptoms, to support a diagnosis [11]. Testosterone is approved for hypogonadism with a medical cause; it is not established for age-related low testosterone [12]. In 2025 FDA added a blood pressure warning across testosterone products [13]. Our TRT guide and TRT clinic checklist cover the rest.
