Hormone therapy in this guide covers two prescriptions: estrogen, with or without a progestogen, for menopause symptoms, and testosterone for men with diagnosed hypogonadism.
How many Chicagoans are in the hormone age range
Census estimates count 2,731,585 Chicago residents, and 13.8% of them are 65 or older, or roughly 377,000 people [3]. Natural menopause arrives at an average age of 52, per the Menopause Society [5], so the larger group asking about estrogen is in midlife, not retirement. FDA's own figures show how few are treated: about 2 million US women aged 46 to 65 got a hormone therapy prescription, out of roughly 41 million women aged 45 to 64 [6].

Illinois rules worth knowing before you pay
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation licenses physicians and posts discipline [4]. The state's Medical Practice Act also bars licensees from splitting fees with anyone in exchange for referrals, apart from listed arrangements [15]. If a clinic's marketing partner seems to be paid per new patient, ask how that works. Large local systems include Northwestern Medicine, Rush and UChicago Medicine [16] [17] [18]. We found no published self-pay hormone price at any of them, so call the gynecology, endocrinology or urology office.

What the rewritten menopause labels say
On November 10, 2025, HHS said FDA would strike heart disease, breast cancer and probable dementia from the boxed warning on menopause hormone products [8]. 6 products had new labels by February 12, 2026 [6]. Endometrial cancer remains boxed for systemic estrogen-alone products [8]. The labeling now points to beginning systemic therapy before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause [8].
For telehealth, Midi Health lists a $250 self-pay first visit and $150 for a return visit [9]; see our Midi review and the wider online HRT comparison.
Chicago testosterone clinics and the label
Approved testosterone is meant for men with primary hypogonadism or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and its value for low levels from aging alone has not been shown [10]. The AUA asks for two total testosterone results under 300 ng/dL plus symptoms [11]. FDA's February 2025 class update dropped the cardiovascular box and put a blood pressure warning on every testosterone product [12]. A clinic willing to skip the second blood draw is not following the guideline. See how to choose a TRT clinic.
Creams, troches and pellets
Compounded bioidentical products are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [19]. The National Academies judged the evidence for them insufficient and urged limiting use to patients who cannot take an approved product [13]. Pellet insertions are marketed at $300 to $500, repeated every 3 to 4 months, according to clinic estimates rather than a published price list [14]. More on bioidentical hormones and pellet costs.

Questions people ask
Where do I look up a Chicago hormone doctor's license?
Illinois physicians are licensed by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which offers a license lookup and posts discipline [4].
Can an Illinois doctor pay for patient referrals?
No. The fee-splitting section of the Illinois Medical Practice Act bars licensees from sharing fees with others in return for referrals, except for specified arrangements [15].
How many older adults live in Chicago?
About 13.8% of Chicago's 2,731,585 residents are 65 or older, roughly 377,000 people, per Census QuickFacts [3].
What does generic estradiol cost in Chicago with a coupon?
GoodRx showed 90 generic estradiol 1 mg tablets for $22.71 on Oct 16, 2026, against a $47.25 retail average [1]. Visit fees are separate.
Can a Chicago woman over 60 still start HRT?
Age alone is not a bar, but FDA's revised labeling favors a systemic start before 60 or within 10 years of menopause and leaves the final call to the patient and prescriber [8].
