Semaglutide in Charlotte: clinics and prices

For a Charlotte Medicaid member, semaglutide is where weight treatment starts: NC Medicaid names Wegovy as its preferred GLP-1 under the coverage restored in December 2025 [1]. Without coverage, NovoCare's October 17, 2026 menu ran from a $149 daily tablet to a $349 weekly pen [2].

Semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk, is the GLP-1 drug inside both Wegovy and Ozempic.

Wegovy first, by state policy

North Carolina's restored benefit kept the old approval rulebook from before the October 2025 lapse. On the state's list, Wegovy sits in the preferred slot, and the two alternatives, Zepbound and Saxenda, are open only to members who have tried Wegovy [1]. In practice, Charlotte Medicaid patients begin with semaglutide.

Ozempic and Mecklenburg's diabetes rate

Roughly one Mecklenburg adult in ten (10.1%) carries a diabetes diagnosis, per 2023 CDC modeling [3]. For them, Ozempic is the semaglutide brand on the label: blood sugar control, plus heart and kidney protection in certain type 2 patients. Weight loss is not among its approved uses [9]. Cash buyers pay NovoCare $349 for doses up to 1 mg, or $499 at 2 mg [7].

Charlotte's older adults and Medicare

About 11.0% of Charlotte residents are 65 or older [4]. Those with Part D drug coverage may qualify for a short-lived Medicare program, the GLP-1 Bridge, which charges $50 a month for Wegovy when BMI and health criteria are met and expires after 2027 [8][10]. See GLP-1s and Medicare.

How many people reached each milestone

STEP 1 reported how many adults on semaglutide 2.4 mg reached different levels of weight loss by week 68: 86.4% lost at least 5% (versus 31.5% on placebo), 69.1% lost at least 10% (versus 12.0%), and 50.5% lost at least 15% (versus 4.9%) [11]. Novant Health's Charlotte weight program lists FDA-approved weight loss medications among its services [12]. More on semaglutide results.

Compounded semaglutide in North Carolina

Some Charlotte clinics still sell compounded semaglutide. It lacks FDA approval, and 990 adverse event reports had reached FDA by the end of May 2026 [13]. If a pharmacy is making it, the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy is the agency that licenses that pharmacy [6]. Read compounded semaglutide.

Label cautions

If medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 runs in your family, semaglutide is off the table; the boxed warning stems from thyroid tumors in rodents. Lasting, severe abdominal pain or any allergic reaction means stopping and calling. Insulin and sulfonylurea users run a higher risk of lows. Type 2 patients should mention new vision problems, because the label flags diabetic retinopathy complications [14]. Emergencies: 911.
