Wegovy, Ozempic or compounded: know which one you mean
"Semaglutide near me" can mean three different products. Wegovy is semaglutide with a weight label, as a weekly pen or a daily pill [5]. Ozempic is semaglutide with a type 2 diabetes label and is not approved for weight loss [6]. Compounded semaglutide is made by a pharmacy, is not FDA-approved, and is not reviewed by FDA for safety, effectiveness or quality [7]. A search for "Ozempic for weight loss near me" usually leads to one of the other two.
Where to fill a semaglutide prescription locally
| Route | How it works | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail pharmacy with the NovoCare self-pay offer | Register for the offer and use it at the pharmacy counter | Wegovy pen $349 ($199 intro); pill $149 to $299 | [1] |
| NovoCare Pharmacy | Prescriber sends the prescription; free home delivery | Same self-pay prices | [1] |
| TrumpRx coupon | For the Wegovy pill, a TrumpRx coupon is taken to a local pharmacy | Wegovy pill from $149; pen from $199 | [8][9] |
| Insurance at your pharmacy | Plan may need prior authorization; add the savings offer | As little as $25, savings capped at $100 a month | [1] |
| Medicare GLP-1 Bridge | Prior authorization; regular pharmacies fill | $50 copay; Wegovy shot and pill only | [4][3] |
Cash pay is now common. A Novo Nordisk executive said about half of Wegovy business comes through self-pay channels and about 90% of Wegovy pill demand is cash purchases [10].
Finding a semaglutide prescriber you can trust
- Start with who prescribes. Your primary care clinician can prescribe Wegovy or Ozempic. For a clinic, get the prescriber's full name and check the license on your state board site; the FSMB directory lists every board [11].
- Ask what you will get. Brand Wegovy, brand Ozempic, or compounded? If compounded, which pharmacy, and is its license in good standing with your state board of pharmacy [12]?
- Expect safety screening. Thyroid cancer history (a contraindication), past serious allergic reaction to semaglutide, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, pregnancy plans and diabetes medicines all matter under the Wegovy label [5].
- Get the whole price. Ask for visit fees, labs and the drug price at your maintenance dose.
Compounded semaglutide at local clinics
FDA declared the semaglutide shortage over on February 21, 2025. Its grace period for compounders ended April 24, 2025 for 503A pharmacies and May 22, 2025 for 503B outsourcing facilities [13]. A 503A pharmacy may still compound for a specific patient, but not routine copies of an approved drug [13]. Watch for these problems:
- Salt forms. Semaglutide sodium and semaglutide acetate are different active ingredients, and FDA knows of no lawful basis for compounding them [7].
- Vitamin blends. In September 2026 FDA called a compounded semaglutide and cyanocobalamin product an "essentially copy" in a warning letter to Empower Pharmacy [14].
- Dosing errors. FDA has reports of people hurt by mismeasured doses of compounded semaglutide, and of doses higher or faster than the label, some needing hospital care [7]. Units depend on the concentration on the pharmacy label; follow your prescriber and the pharmacy label, and ask the pharmacist.
- Claims FDA has cited. "Same active ingredient as Ozempic and Wegovy," "generic," or "FDA-approved pharmacy" [15][16].
- Counterfeit Ozempic. FDA is aware of counterfeit Ozempic in the US [7]; buy only from a licensed pharmacy.
FDA had 990 adverse event reports for compounded semaglutide as of May 31, 2026 [7]. Read compounded semaglutide, research-use-only semaglutide and our FDA warning letter tracker.

More: how to get semaglutide online and online GLP-1 programs compared.
Before you start semaglutide
Do not take it with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Get care for severe stomach pain that will not go away, which can signal pancreatitis, and emergency help for swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing. Low blood sugar is more likely if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy [5]. Call 911 in an emergency. Basics: semaglutide.
