Moving from a compounded vial to brand Wegovy

Phoenix patients who started on compounded semaglutide during the shortage should know that FDA has since declared the shortage over and says pharmacy compounding is now limited to patient-specific needs, while outsourcing facilities may not compound semaglutide from bulk [8]. FDA warning letters have treated marketing claims of the same active ingredient as Wegovy as misleading [9]. Arizona pharmacies are licensed by the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy [10]. Our guide to switching GLP-1s covers what to ask your prescriber.

Ozempic is the diabetes brand

With 10.6% of Maricopa County adults reporting diabetes [4], Ozempic comes up often. It is approved for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss [11]. NovoCare lists it at $349 a month for 0.25 to 1 mg and $499 for 2 mg, and commercially insured patients whose plan covers it can pay as little as $25 [12].

Phoenix retirees and the Medicare Bridge

About 12.2% of Phoenix residents are 65 or older [5]. Part D enrollees who qualify by BMI and health history can get Wegovy injection or tablets through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge for $50 a month until December 31, 2027. Ozempic is not covered by the Bridge, and approval goes through a central prior authorization run by Humana [13][14].

Arizona Medicaid and job-based plans

KFF's January 2026 count of Medicaid programs covering obesity GLP-1s does not include Arizona [6]. Phoenix's median household income is $81,332 [5], and many workers here have job-based plans; Lilly, citing IFEBP, says about half of such plans do not cover obesity drugs [15].

Read before starting

Semaglutide labels carry a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents and rule out use with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Severe stomach pain that persists may be pancreatitis; stop and call. Watch for allergic reactions. Insulin or a sulfonylurea raises the chance of low blood sugar. The Wegovy pill can raise levels of levothyroxine, so thyroid patients should tell their prescriber [2]. Call 911 in an emergency.
