Semaglutide is a once-weekly or daily GLP-1 drug sold as Wegovy for weight, heart-risk and liver uses, and as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes.
Wegovy's other approvals, and why they matter in Utah
Wegovy is not only a weight drug. FDA approved it on March 8, 2024 to lower the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight [7], and the label also covers noncirrhotic MASH, a fatty liver disease [8]. Those uses now carry weight in Utah: after the obesity-only pilot ended, Utah Medicaid still covers Wegovy for cardiovascular risk reduction and MASH with prior authorization [3]. In Salt Lake County, 29.9% of adults have obesity and 8.5% have diagnosed diabetes [4].

The 7.2 mg dose
The Wegovy label allows an increase to 7.2 mg if 2.4 mg has been tolerated for at least 4 weeks and more weight loss is clinically indicated [8]. Side effects were more common at the higher dose: nausea in 39% on 7.2 mg versus 35% on 2.4 mg, and dysesthesia, an abnormal skin sensation, in 22% versus 6% [8]. Compounded and counterfeit products
FDA says compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved, that semaglutide sodium and acetate salts have no lawful basis in compounding, and that counterfeit Ozempic has been found in the US [11]. Utah pharmacies are licensed by DOPL [6]. Buy from a licensed pharmacy and see compounded semaglutide.
