Semaglutide is the Novo Nordisk drug that mimics the gut hormone GLP-1; it is labeled as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and as Wegovy for weight and heart risk.
Diabetes or weight: how Baltimore prescriptions split
Roughly one Baltimore adult in seven has a diabetes diagnosis (14.4%), and 38.1% have obesity, according to CDC PLACES modeling for 2023 [2]. Plenty of people fall into both groups. Ozempic holds the diabetes approvals: blood sugar control, plus heart and kidney protection in certain type 2 patients. It has no weight-loss indication [6]. Wegovy holds the weight approval for adults and for children 12 and older, along with a heart-risk indication for adults who have heart disease and excess weight [7]. Our Ozempic vs Wegovy comparison sets out the dosing gap, and Ozempic dosage lists its steps.

Maryland Medicaid, Medicare and Baltimore seniors
KFF's January 2026 tally found 13 Medicaid programs paying for obesity GLP-1s, and Maryland's was not on it [4]. About 15.3% of Baltimore residents have reached 65 [5]. Those with Part D may qualify for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, a $50 monthly benefit for Wegovy pens and tablets that leaves Ozempic out [9]. Ozempic written for diabetes still runs through each Part D plan's usual formulary rules. More on Medicare and GLP-1 drugs.
Clinic-made vials and license checks
Compounded semaglutide vials are not Wegovy. They lack FDA approval, and FDA does not vet them for safety, quality or effectiveness before sale [10]. Some patients who measured those doses on their own ended up in the hospital [10]. Our compounded semaglutide explainer goes further. The Maryland Board of Physicians licenses the doctors who prescribe here [11].

Label warnings worth knowing
Semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodent studies, so both labels carry a boxed warning; skip it if you or a relative has had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2 [7] [6]. Belly pain that is severe and does not let up can signal pancreatitis and needs a doctor. Lows in blood sugar get more likely when it is paired with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Anyone planning a pregnancy should come off it at least 2 months beforehand [7] [6]. Trouble breathing or a swelling face: call 911.
