Novo Nordisk's semaglutide is a GLP-1 medicine marketed as Wegovy (a weekly pen or a daily tablet) for weight and heart risk, and as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes.
Filling a prescription in Chicago
You do not need a special clinic to use Novo's cash prices. The company says they work at more than 70,000 US pharmacies with its savings offer, through NovoCare Pharmacy shipping or pickup at 9,000+ CVS stores, and through partners such as Costco and GoodRx [5]. So a CVS near you in the city can be the pickup point. You register for the offer, then the prescriber sends the prescription [1].
Set that against Chicago's median household income of $77,902 for 2020 to 2024 [4]: twelve months of pens at $349 adds up to $4,188, and visit fees come on top.

- Ozempic: labeled for type 2 diabetes, with no weight-loss approval [7].

The Chicago cash price card
| Choice | Monthly price | Detail |

| Wegovy pen | $349 [1] | Starter boxes (0.25 and 0.5 mg) cost $199 each for a newcomer's first two, through Dec 31, 2026 |
| Wegovy HD pen, 7.2 mg | $399 [1] | Highest strength |
| Ozempic | $349; $499 at 2 mg [8] | For type 2 diabetes |
Dates to watch: Dec 31 and Jan 1
Two calendar changes are coming. The $199 starter price ends after December 31, 2026 [1]. Then, from January 1, 2027, Novo plans to drop the list price of Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus to $675 a month [9]. List price drives insurance claims and deductibles; the $349 cash price is a separate number.
Illinois Medicaid, job-based plans and clinic vials
For weight use, Illinois Medicaid leaves GLP-1s off its benefit; it was outside the 13 paying programs in KFF's January 2026 count [2]. An employer plan that already covers Wegovy can pair with Novo's copay card, which can lower a month to $25 [1].
Some Chicago clinics sell compounded semaglutide instead. It has no FDA approval, FDA does not evaluate such products for safety, effectiveness or quality, and the agency has reports of hospital stays after dosing mistakes with compounded injections [10]. Our compounded semaglutide page explains the rules. Illinois physicians are licensed through IDFPR [11].

Safety notes from the Wegovy label
If MEN 2 or medullary thyroid carcinoma shows up in your own or your family's history, do not use it; the boxed warning comes from thyroid tumors in rodents. Stomach pain that is intense and lasting can mean pancreatitis, so stop and get seen. The odds of low blood sugar climb with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Plan to stop at least 2 months ahead of a planned pregnancy, and tell the surgical team you take it before anesthesia [6]. A severe allergic reaction is a 911 call.
