Semaglutide is a GLP-1 drug that lowers appetite and blood sugar, sold as Wegovy for weight management and Ozempic for type 2 diabetes.
Start with Medical Assistance or a job-based plan
Minnesota stands out. KFF counted only 13 state Medicaid programs paying for GLP-1s for obesity as of January 2026 [5], and Stateline named Minnesota's among them in April 2026 [1]. Medical Assistance members in Minneapolis should ask their health plan which prior authorization steps it uses. Workers whose employer plan lists Wegovy can use Novo's savings offer, which can cut the cost to $25 a month [2].

Hennepin County health numbers
Minneapolis counted 430,324 residents in July 2025 and a median household income of $80,846 [7]. CDC PLACES city estimates put adult obesity at 28.6% and diagnosed diabetes at 7.4% [4]; Hennepin County as a whole sits at 27.1% and 8.1% [6].
Cash price if coverage says no
NovoCare's Oct 17, 2026 list for Minnesota buyers: the Wegovy tablet at $149 to $299 a month by strength, the pen at $349 (a new patient's first two low-dose boxes are $199), and Ozempic at $349 to $499 [2] [3]. Those are drug-only figures; compare channels on semaglutide cost and the Wegovy pill price page.
Minnesota's referral-payment rule
Under Minnesota Statutes 147.091, a physician can be disciplined for paying or accepting a commission or rebate mainly for patient referrals or for prescribing drugs [8]. The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice licenses the state's physicians [9]. That rule is one reason our sponsored spots stay separate and labeled.
Results, briefly
STEP 1 participants on semaglutide 2.4 mg averaged a 14.9% weight reduction at 68 weeks, against 2.4% with placebo [10]; in the extension, about two-thirds of that loss returned within a year of stopping [11]. Details: semaglutide results and what happens when you stop.
Midwest comparisons: St. Louis, where Missouri's Medicaid was also reported covering these drugs [1], plus Kansas City and Chicago. Same city, broader options: medical weight loss in Minneapolis. The drug itself: semaglutide guide.

Label warnings to know first
The boxed warning comes from thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents. Anyone who has had medullary thyroid cancer, has a relative who had it, or has MEN 2 should not use semaglutide [12]. The Wegovy label also warns of acute pancreatitis (stomach pain that is severe and does not let up), gallbladder disease, kidney injury, allergic reactions, and low blood sugar when paired with insulin or a sulfonylurea [12]. Stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. Compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved [13]. In an emergency, call 911.
