Semaglutide is a Novo Nordisk GLP-1 drug sold as Wegovy for chronic weight management and Ozempic for type 2 diabetes.
Missouri Medicaid and semaglutide
Missouri appeared on Stateline's April 30, 2026 list of states whose Medicaid programs cover GLP-1s for obesity [3]. Nationally the list is shrinking: KFF counted 13 states in January 2026, down from 16 in October 2025, after California, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and South Carolina ended coverage [6]. We did not review MO HealthNet's own drug criteria. Ask which semaglutide product is preferred and how prior authorization works.

Kansas City's seniors and the Bridge
Some 14.3% of Kansas City residents are 65 or older [5]. Medicare's GLP-1 Bridge charges eligible Part D members $50 for each month of Wegovy through December 31, 2027 [7]. NCOA reports that manufacturers supply Bridge drugs to Medicare at a net price of about $245 a month [8]. Ozempic is not part of the Bridge [9]. See GLP-1 Medicare coverage.
Diabetes in Jackson County and Ozempic
CDC estimates 12.1% of Jackson County adults had diagnosed diabetes in 2023 [4]. Ozempic is the semaglutide brand for type 2 diabetes [10]. Its missed-dose rule differs from Wegovy's: per the Ozempic label, take a missed dose within 5 days, otherwise skip it [10]. With commercial coverage, NovoCare's savings offer can bring Ozempic to $25 a month [2].
Pill or shot: label rules that differ
- Wegovy tablet: once a day, in the morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of plain water; wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other pills. A missed tablet is skipped [11].
- Wegovy pen: once a week. If a dose is missed and the next one is more than 2 days away, take it; if less, skip it. Missing 2 or more weeks in a row may mean restarting at a lower dose, so call the prescriber [11].
Compare in Wegovy pill versus injection.
Compounded and imported products
FDA says compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved and has warned of dosing errors with compounded injections [12]. It has also warned about counterfeit Ozempic in the US [12]. See compounded semaglutide.
Semaglutide label safety
Not for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, because of a boxed warning based on rodent thyroid tumors. Persistent severe stomach pain may be pancreatitis; seek care. Allergic reactions need prompt attention. Insulin or sulfonylureas raise the risk of low blood sugar. Stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy [11]. Call 911 in an emergency.
