Does the Wegovy pill work?
The approval rests on OASIS 4, a 64-week trial of 307 adults with obesity or overweight. Counting everyone who started, the pill group lost an average of 13.6% of body weight, against 2.4% on placebo. Novo also estimated 16.6%, against 2.7%, for the case in which everyone stayed on treatment [2]. These are group averages. Some people lose more and some lose little.
For context, the Wegovy injection's STEP 1 trial reported 14.9% average loss at 68 weeks [10], and Lilly's Foundayo pill reported 11.1% at 72 weeks on its top dose in its label's first trial [11]. Trials differ in design, so compare with care. See Wegovy pill vs injection and Foundayo vs Wegovy pill.
How long it takes
The label steps the dose up each month: 1.5 mg for days 1 to 30, 4 mg for days 31 to 60, 9 mg for days 61 to 90, and 25 mg from day 91 as the maintenance dose [3]. The trial result was measured at 64 weeks [2]. If you are not losing weight in the first weeks, you are still on starting doses; talk with your prescriber before changing anything. Staying on a lower dose is a prescriber's call, not a label instruction.
How to take it
- Take it in the morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of plain water [3].
- Swallow the tablet whole. Do not take more than one tablet a day [3].
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other pills [3].
- If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one the following day [3].
- Store the bottle at 68 to 77 F in a dry place, in the original closed bottle [3].
The label's morning, empty-stomach rule means night dosing is not the labeled way to take it, and cutting or doubling tablets is not either. With levothyroxine, the tablet raised levothyroxine levels by 33% in a study, so the label advises monitoring thyroid drugs and other narrow-range oral medicines [3]. Ask your pharmacist how to time them.
Side effects
The label says side effects of the 25 mg tablet were similar in type and frequency to the 2.4 mg injection, where nausea hit 44% of people against 16% on placebo and fatigue 11% against 5%. Abnormal skin sensations (dysesthesia) occurred in 5% on the pill against 0% on placebo, and 6.9% stopped for side effects against 5.9% [3]. More on Wegovy side effects.
Who should not take the Wegovy pill
Wegovy has a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents. Do not use it with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 [3]. Get care for severe stomach pain that will not go away (possible pancreatitis) or signs of an allergic reaction. Low blood sugar is more likely with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Stop when pregnancy is recognized and at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. Breastfeeding is not recommended on the tablet [3]. For an emergency, call 911.
How to get the Wegovy pill
- Get a prescription. The pill is approved for adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, and to lower heart risk in adults with heart disease [3].
- Fill it at a retail pharmacy with Novo's savings offer, through NovoCare Pharmacy home delivery, or through a telehealth program [12].
- If you have commercial insurance, ask whether the pill is on your plan's drug list before paying cash. Our Wegovy insurance guide covers the steps.
- If you are on Medicare Part D, check the Bridge criteria on our Medicare page.
Novo said in September 2026 that about 90% of Wegovy pill demand is cash purchases [13].
