Hidden costs

  • Follow-up imaging and visits. In the first roughly 160 patients of one academic program, about 90% had some finding and about 30% needed follow-up [5]. Those follow-up tests are billed separately.
  • Add-ons. Prenuvo sells separate Brain Health and Heart Health assessments at $799 each [2]. Ezra sells a Heart CT for $349 and a Lung CT for $399 [4].
  • Membership pricing. Ezra's $899 price requires a Function Health membership, listed at $365 a year [4] [9].
  • Travel. Prenuvo has 28 open sites, so you may need to travel to one [7].

What radiologists and researchers say

The American College of Radiology does not believe there is sufficient evidence to recommend total body screening for patients without symptoms, risk factors or a family history suggesting disease [3]. RSNA News reported that the Netherlands does not permit whole-body MRI screening of healthy people, and that about 1% of patients in one early US program had a malignant or suspected malignant finding [5].

In May 2026 two academic radiologists wrote in a JAMA editorial that elective whole-body MRI companies lack proof that the benefits outweigh the harms. Prenuvo, SimonMed and Ezra disputed the editorial [10]. We found no USPSTF recommendation on whole-body MRI screening in our research.

Before you book

Ask who reads the scan, whether you get a call to explain findings, and how follow-up is handled. If you have symptoms, see a doctor instead. A diagnostic MRI ordered for symptoms is a different service; ask your plan how it is covered.

Ways to pay less

  • Pick the regions you care about. Prenuvo's Focused scan is $1,199 versus $2,499 for Whole Body [2].
  • Use intro pricing where offered. SimonMed listed its Core MRI at $899 intro versus $999 [1].
  • Check whether a heart question is better answered by a coronary calcium score, which most people pay $100 to $150 for [11].
  • Ask your HSA or FSA administrator whether a screening MRI qualifies before you pay.

Insurance and Medicare

The prices on this page are cash prices for elective screening. We did not find any insurer or Medicare coverage for screening scans of people without symptoms in our research. Follow-up tests ordered by your doctor for a finding may be billed to insurance under your plan's rules.
