Research-use-only tirzepatide and semaglutide: what you are actually buying

There is no approved way to switch from tirzepatide to retatrutide, because no medicine containing retatrutide has been approved by any regulator in the world; Lilly says it is still in Phase 3 trials and cannot be sold to consumers [1]. Vials sold online as "research use only" retatrutide, tirzepatide or semaglutide are not legal for human use, and FDA says their quality is unknown and may be harmful [2].

Medical review: pending. A licensed clinician has not yet reviewed this page.

"Research use only" GLP-1s are peptide vials sold online with a label saying they are not for human consumption, often under coded names, that FDA treats as unapproved drugs when they are marketed for people to inject.

The short answer on retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational Eli Lilly molecule in Phase 3 trials for obesity, type 2 diabetes and related conditions [1]. FDA says it has not been found safe and effective for any condition and cannot be used in compounding [2]. That means:

  • Switching from tirzepatide to retatrutide: there is no approved protocol, dose or schedule, because there is no approved product. Anything sold as retatrutide outside a clinical trial is an unapproved drug.
  • Taking it with Zepbound, Wegovy or Ozempic: no approved guidance exists. The approved labels for tirzepatide and semaglutide already say not to combine them with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist [8] [9].
  • "Is it better than tirzepatide?" No regulator has reviewed retatrutide data and approved a label, so there is nothing comparable to Zepbound's or Wegovy's label results. A black-market vial is not the drug used in Lilly's trials.

If you are on tirzepatide or semaglutide and want stronger results, talk with your prescriber about the approved options, including dose changes within the label and other approved drugs. See switching GLP-1s for what the labels say.

Is retatrutide the same as Ozempic or tirzepatide?

No. Retatrutide is a separate investigational molecule, not semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and not tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro) [1] [2]. FDA lists it separately from those drugs in its warnings. We have not reviewed retatrutide trial readouts for this page, so we make no claims about how its results compare.

What "research use only" really means

Sellers label peptide vials "research use only" or "not for human consumption," then sell them to consumers. FDA has warned companies selling semaglutide, tirzepatide, retatrutide, survodutide and mazdutide this way, noting they were sold with dosing instructions, and says the products' quality is unknown and may be harmful [2]. In its warning letters, FDA has rejected the label when the evidence showed the products were meant for people [10] [11]. Some sellers use coded names such as "GLP-3 RT" or "GLP1-R" for retatrutide [4] [11].

These are not compounded drugs. Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide come from a licensed pharmacy with a prescription, under rules explained in compounded tirzepatide and compounded semaglutide. Research-use-only vials have neither.

Eli Lilly's August 2026 lawsuits

On Aug 12, 2026, Lilly announced six lawsuits against sellers it says falsely claimed their retatrutide was for "research use only" when it was meant for people [1]:

  • Aesthetic Envy Cosmetic Centers (N.D. Cal.)
  • Astra LLC dba Astra Peptides (W.D. Tex.)
  • Legendary Peptides (E.D. Tex.)
  • Striker Pharmacy (S.D. Tex.)
  • Texas Peptides Inc. (W.D. Tex.)
  • Lone Star Peptide Co. (S.D. Tex.)

Lilly also said it had referred more than 200 people and companies to FDA, the Justice Department, state attorneys general and licensing boards, and reported more than 14,000 websites, ads, posts and listings in over 100 countries [1]. Lawsuits are allegations until a court rules.

The risks, in plain terms

  • Unknown contents and purity. No regulator checks what is in the vial [2]. Lilly is reported to have found samples with wrong doses, from none to overdose, and some with a different active ingredient such as insulin [13].
  • Contamination. The same report says samples were likely made in non-sterile conditions [13]. Injecting a non-sterile product risks infection.
  • Dose errors. FDA has reports of hospitalizations from GLP-1 dosing mistakes even with pharmacy-labeled compounded vials [2]. Unlabeled or mislabeled powders add another layer of guesswork.
  • Serious reactions. Reports of serious side effects including liver failure have been linked to black-market retatrutide, per Lilly as reported by pharmaphorum [13].
  • No recourse. If something goes wrong, there is no prescriber, pharmacy or label to turn to.

If you have already used one of these products

Tell a clinician what you took, even if you are not sure what was in it. Seek care for severe stomach pain that will not go away, signs of an allergic reaction (swelling, rash, trouble breathing), signs of low blood sugar, or any new or severe symptom. Call 911 in an emergency.

For context on approved results: in SURMOUNT-5, people on tirzepatide lost an average of 20.2% of body weight at 72 weeks and people on semaglutide 13.7% [17]. Those are averages from the approved drugs, not a promise for any one person. Wegovy vs Zepbound has the details.

Questions people ask

How do you switch from tirzepatide to retatrutide?

There is no approved way. No medicine containing retatrutide has been approved by any regulator; Lilly says it is in Phase 3 trials and cannot be sold to consumers [1]. Talk with your prescriber about approved options instead.

Can you take tirzepatide and retatrutide together?

There is no approved guidance for combining them, because retatrutide is not approved [1]. Tirzepatide's label says it is not recommended with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist [8]. Ask a clinician before combining any of these drugs.

Can you take retatrutide with Wegovy?

No approved protocol exists. Retatrutide is unapproved [1], and the Wegovy label says Wegovy is not recommended with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist [9]. A clinician can review approved alternatives.

Is retatrutide better than tirzepatide?

No regulator has reviewed and approved retatrutide data, so there is no label to compare with Zepbound's [1]. FDA says retatrutide has not been found safe and effective for any condition [2].

Is retatrutide the same as Ozempic?

No. Ozempic is semaglutide [18]. Retatrutide is a separate investigational Lilly molecule in Phase 3 trials [1].

Is it legal to buy research-use-only GLP-1s?

Selling them for human use is illegal; FDA treats them as unapproved new drugs when they are marketed for people and has sent warning letters to sellers [10] [2]. FDA says sales of unapproved retatrutide to consumers are illegal [1].

Can you take cagrilintide with tirzepatide?

Cagrilintide is not approved. FDA says it cannot be used in compounding and has not been found safe and effective for any condition [2]. No approved guidance exists for combining it with tirzepatide.

What is the cheapest legal alternative?

At the lowest doses, the Wegovy pill and Foundayo cost $149 a month, and Zepbound starts at $299 through LillyDirect, all checked Oct 17, 2026 and all needing a prescription [6] [7] [14].
