A private doctor, or personal physician, is a doctor you reach through a membership arrangement, such as a concierge practice that charges a fee for enhanced services and access [3].
What people mean by a private doctor
The phrase covers a few membership models. They differ in price and in whether your insurance is billed:
- Concierge medicine: a membership fee for enhanced services, with insurance still billed for covered care [3][7]. See our concierge medicine guide.
- Direct primary care: a periodic fee that replaces insurance billing for primary care [8]. See direct primary care.
- Hybrid memberships: a small fee for digital access, with visits billed to insurance, such as One Medical [6].

How to get a private doctor
- Decide which model fits your budget: hybrid, direct primary care or concierge. Our concierge vs DPC comparison lays out the trade-offs.
- Search your area with our concierge city guides or the DPC Frontier mapper, which listed 3,232 DPC practices on October 17, 2026 [11].
- Ask for the fee, registration charges and what is billed separately, in writing.
- Ask how quickly you can be seen and who answers after hours.
- Check the doctor's license with your state medical board [12].
- Read the contract's cancellation and refund terms before you pay.
After-hours access and home visits
Access promises vary, so compare them line by line. Cleveland Clinic Concierge Medicine lists 24/7 physician access and same- or next-day appointments on most weekdays [13]. KerixHealth lists 24/7 care team access [10]. A Long Island DPC practice's directory listing mentions physician text, email and cell access and home visits [14]. Get the practice's own terms in writing.
Medicare and insurance
Medicare doesn't cover concierge membership fees [15]. Read concierge medicine and Medicare before signing a contract, and is concierge medicine worth it for the yearly math.
