Medical weight loss means treating obesity under a prescriber's care, often with FDA-approved medicine, diet support and regular check-ins.
Miami-Dade by the numbers
CDC PLACES estimates that 29.5% of Miami-Dade adults had obesity in 2023 and 15.4% had diagnosed diabetes [5]. The diabetes figure is notable: it is higher than the 13.2% CDC estimates for Harris County, Texas [8], even though Miami-Dade's obesity estimate is lower. The city of Miami had 489,812 residents in July 2025 [6], a fraction of the county it sits in. For people with type 2 diabetes, insurance may cover a GLP-1 for blood sugar even when it will not pay for weight loss alone.

Hospital care in Miami
UHealth, the University of Miami Health System, runs a bariatric surgery program [9]. Its page describes surgery, and we could not confirm a separate medical, nonsurgical weight program there. Baptist Health South Florida is the other large system in our research [10]. If you want medicine rather than surgery, ask either system for an obesity medicine or endocrinology referral and for the self-pay visit rate.
Spotting a weak offer
Miami has many med spas and IV lounges selling weight loss shots. Florida law makes it a felony to offer or receive kickbacks or split fees to induce patient referrals [7], so be wary of referral bonuses or influencer codes tied to a clinic. Other red flags:
- No exam or lab work before a prescription.
- A vial with the clinic's name but no pharmacy name, or a claim that a compounded drug is "generic Ozempic". Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [11].
- Claims that a pharmacy is "FDA-approved". FDA says it does not approve or license any pharmacy or outsourcing facility [12].
- A price that covers only the first month.
Check any prescriber on the Florida Board of Medicine site [13].
Health warnings
GLP-1 medicines carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in animal studies. Severe stomach pain that will not go away may mean pancreatitis; stop the drug and get care. Watch for allergic reactions, and for low blood sugar if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea [14][15]. If you could become pregnant, ask about the label's pregnancy guidance. Call 911 in an emergency.
Medicare and work insurance
If you are on Medicare Part D and meet the BMI rules, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge charges a $50 copay a month from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027 [16][17]. It covers Wegovy, Foundayo and the Zepbound KwikPen, but not Zepbound vials or Ozempic [17]. See GLP-1 coverage by Medicare and insurance.
