How we check

What to eat and drink on Ozempic

No food or drink is off limits on the Ozempic label, and the weekly shot works the same before or after a meal [1]. Alcohol is not mentioned in the label sections we read, so the question goes to your prescriber, especially if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, the two medicines that make a low blood sugar more likely with Ozempic [1]. Fluids matter too: vomiting and diarrhea can dehydrate you, and dehydration has led to kidney injury [1].

Medical review: pending. A licensed clinician has not yet reviewed this page.

An Ozempic diet is how a person eats and drinks while on Ozempic (semaglutide) for type 2 diabetes; the label itself sets no particular diet.

What Ozempic does to blood sugar

Semaglutide prompts the pancreas to release more insulin and less glucagon, but mainly when glucose is high, and it slightly delays stomach emptying [1]. It does not lower sugar by pushing it out in urine. Taken alone for 30 weeks, Ozempic lowered A1C by an average of 1.4 to 1.6 points, and the 2 mg dose lowered it by 2.1 points over 40 weeks [1]. These are changes measured over months; the label does not describe a quick drop after one shot.

If Ozempic is added to insulin or a sulfonylurea, the label says the prescriber may lower those doses [1]. Learn what a low feels like: shaking, sweating, confusion, hunger and a racing heart. Your care team can tell you how to treat one and when to test. The label's low blood sugar numbers come only from people with type 2 diabetes, so someone taking Ozempic off-label without diabetes should ask their prescriber what applies to them.

Beer, wine and other alcohol

We found no mention of alcohol, beer or wine in the Ozempic label sections we read [1]. That silence is not a green light. Your prescriber can tell you what amount, if any, makes sense, and the answer may be stricter if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, have had pancreatitis, or are already dealing with nausea. The label has no data on whether Ozempic changes alcohol cravings. The tirzepatide version of this page is what to eat on Mounjaro.

What to eat, and what to go easy on

The label has no Ozempic food list. Since semaglutide slows stomach emptying [1] and nausea is the most common side effect, at 20.3% on 1 mg [1], many people do better with smaller portions and stopping as soon as they feel full. A registered dietitian or your clinician can build a plan around your diabetes. For protein, fiber and meal ideas across the class, see the GLP-1 diet plan; for strength work, see how to keep muscle on a GLP-1. No food copies what semaglutide does.

There is no calorie or protein target on the label. The right amounts depend on your body size, activity and kidney function, which is a conversation for your care team. Coffee and exercise carry no label restrictions.

Fluids, supplements and other pills

When vomiting or diarrhea leaves you dehydrated, the kidneys can suffer: the label reports acute kidney injury on Ozempic, sometimes needing dialysis [1]. Sip fluids through the day, and call your prescriber if nothing stays down. Slower stomach emptying can also change how tablets are absorbed [1], so ask your pharmacist how to time vitamins and other medicines. The full list is on Ozempic interactions.

Call for help

Severe stomach pain that will not go away, with or without vomiting, can be pancreatitis; stop Ozempic and call your prescriber [1]. Treat low blood sugar right away and get emergency help if someone cannot swallow or is confused. Call 911 for trouble breathing or throat swelling.

Ozempic and weight loss eating

Ozempic is a type 2 diabetes medicine; weight loss is not a labeled use [1]. If weight management is the goal, Wegovy is the semaglutide product labeled for it [2]. For results and cost, see Ozempic results and Ozempic cost.

Questions people ask

Can you drink alcohol on Ozempic?

Alcohol is not addressed in the Ozempic label sections we read [1]. Ask your prescriber, especially if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, since those raise the chance of low blood sugar with Ozempic [1].

Does Ozempic lower blood sugar?

Yes. In label trials, A1C fell 1.4 to 1.6 points on Ozempic alone over 30 weeks and 2.1 points on 2 mg over 40 weeks [1].

Can Ozempic cause low blood sugar?

On its own, documented symptomatic lows occurred in 1.6% (0.5 mg) and 3.8% (1 mg) vs 0% on placebo. Rates were higher with basal insulin (up to 29.8%) or a sulfonylurea (up to 24.4%) [1].

Do I need to take Ozempic with food?

No. The label says to take it once weekly at any time of day, with or without meals [1].

What should I eat on Ozempic?

The label sets no specific diet. Because Ozempic slows stomach emptying [1], smaller meals may be easier. Ask your clinician or a dietitian for a plan.

How much water should I drink on Ozempic?

The label gives no amount, but it warns that dehydration from vomiting or diarrhea has caused kidney injury [1]. Drink fluids regularly and call your prescriber if you cannot keep them down.

Does Ozempic make you pee out sugar?

No. Ozempic works by raising insulin, lowering glucagon and slowing stomach emptying [1].

Can I take vitamins with Ozempic?

Ozempic slows stomach emptying and may change how oral medicines are absorbed [1]. Your pharmacist can help with timing.
