How we check

Does Mounjaro need to be refrigerated? Storage and travel

Mounjaro's prescribing information (Section 16.2) and the patient leaflets in its carton hold its storage rules [1]. We could not reach that section on October 17, 2026, so this page does not state any Mounjaro limit. For comparison only, the label for Zepbound, a different brand of tirzepatide sold in the same device types, says to refrigerate at 36 to 46 F (2 to 8 C), allows single-dose pens and vials out of the fridge up to 86 F (30 C) for 21 days in total, and says not to freeze [2]. Those are Zepbound's rules. Confirm Mounjaro's in your carton.

Medical review: pending. A licensed clinician has not yet reviewed this page.

Mounjaro storage is the set of refrigeration, room-temperature, light and freezing instructions in Section 16.2 of the Mounjaro label and in the patient leaflets that come with it.

These are Zepbound's rules, not Mounjaro's

We could not read Mounjaro's storage section or its patient leaflets on October 17, 2026. Every temperature and day count on this page comes from the Zepbound label. Zepbound and Mounjaro both contain tirzepatide and use the same device types [3], but they have separate labels, and your Mounjaro carton is the one to follow. If it says something different, go with the carton and ask your pharmacist.

Zepbound KwikPen or multi-dose vial36 to 46 F (2 to 8 C)Up to 86 F (30 C)After 30 days at room temperature, 30 days after first use, or after 4 weekly doses, even if medicine remains [2]
Source: Zepbound Medication Guide [2]. Zepbound also says to keep the medicine in its carton away from light and not to freeze it [2]. Mounjaro's rules may differ; check your Mounjaro carton.

Do not treat these Zepbound limits as permission for a Mounjaro pen. Until you have read the Mounjaro leaflet, the cautious choice is to keep the pen in the fridge, and to write on the carton the date it first came out, so you can compare against whatever limit the leaflet gives. More tirzepatide storage questions are on tirzepatide storage, and the semaglutide side is on Ozempic storage.

Hot cars, frozen pens and expiration dates

The Zepbound label says not to use tirzepatide that has been frozen [2]. If a Mounjaro pen froze, was left somewhere hot, or the liquid looks cloudy or has specks, skip it and call your pharmacist. Zepbound's label describes the liquid as clear and colorless to slightly yellow [4]. The expiration date is printed on the carton; past that date, ask for a replacement. Neither label text we read covers putting a pen back in the fridge after time out, or injecting it cold, so ask your pharmacist.

Packing Mounjaro for a trip

  • Put pens in your cabin bag; a cargo hold can get cold enough to freeze them, and you cannot check the temperature there.
  • Leave pens in the original carton with the pharmacy label on it, and read TSA guidance on medicines and needles before you go.
  • On long trips, use an insulated case and keep a note of days out of the fridge, so you stay within whatever limit your leaflet sets.
  • Need to shift your shot day? The label allows it when doses are at least 72 hours apart [1]. Shot steps are on how to use Mounjaro.

What Mounjaro is approved for

Mounjaro's label covers blood sugar control in adults and in children 10 and older with type 2 diabetes, plus lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death in high-risk adults with type 2 diabetes [1]. Against semaglutide 1 mg in SURPASS-2, average A1C fell 2.0 to 2.3 points on Mounjaro vs 1.9 on semaglutide at 40 weeks [1]. Mounjaro is not approved for weight loss; the tirzepatide brand labeled for weight management is Zepbound [3]. Blood pressure results were not in the label sections we read, and patent dates were not researched. See Mounjaro results and Mounjaro cost.

Safety reminders

Mounjaro carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors found in rats [1]. Stomach pain that is severe and does not go away means stop Mounjaro and call your prescriber [1]. Swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing, is a 911 call.

Questions people ask

Does Mounjaro need to be refrigerated?

Mounjaro's rules are in Section 16.2 of its label and its carton leaflets [1], which we could not confirm on October 17, 2026. For comparison only, the Zepbound label (same medicine, different brand) says to refrigerate at 36 to 46 F [2]. Check your Mounjaro carton.

How long can Mounjaro stay out of the fridge?

We could not confirm Mounjaro's limit. For comparison only, the Zepbound label allows its single-dose pens or vials up to 86 F for 21 days total, and its KwikPens or multi-dose vials up to 30 days or 4 doses [2]. Those are Zepbound's rules; check your Mounjaro carton.

What happens if Mounjaro freezes?

We could not confirm Mounjaro's wording. The Zepbound label says not to use tirzepatide that has been frozen [2]. Call your pharmacist about a replacement.

Can you take Mounjaro on a plane?

Yes. Pack it in your cabin bag with the pharmacy label and check TSA rules. If travel moves your shot day, the label allows that when doses are at least 72 hours apart [1].

Does Mounjaro expire?

Yes. Use it before the date printed on the carton, and within any room-temperature limit in its leaflet.

Is Mounjaro good for diabetes?

It is approved for type 2 diabetes. In SURPASS-1, average A1C fell 1.7 to 1.8 points at 40 weeks vs 0.1 on placebo [1].

Is Mounjaro good for your heart?

Yes, for one group: since August 2026 its label includes cutting heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death in high-risk adults with type 2 diabetes [1].

Is Mounjaro good for weight loss?

It is not approved for weight loss [1]. Zepbound, the same medicine, is approved for weight management [3].
