How we check

Does Ozempic need to be refrigerated? Storage and travel

Ozempic's own storage limits, such as how cold to keep a new pen and how long a pen in use may stay at room temperature, are in Section 16.2 of its prescribing information and in the Instructions for Use packed with each pen [1]. We could not read those sections on October 17, 2026, and the Ozempic Medication Guide we did read has no storage section. So this page gives no Ozempic temperatures or day counts. Use the leaflet in your carton, or ask your pharmacist.

Medical review: pending. A licensed clinician has not yet reviewed this page.

Ozempic storage means the fridge, room-temperature, light and freezing directions that Section 16.2 of the Ozempic label and the pen's Instructions for Use give.

These are not Ozempic's rules

We could not open Ozempic's storage instructions on October 17, 2026, so this page does not state any Ozempic refrigeration rule or day limit. Every temperature and day count in the comparison table below comes from the Wegovy or Zepbound label, not from Ozempic's. Follow the leaflet in your Ozempic carton, and ask your pharmacist about a pen that was left out or got hot.

Where Ozempic's storage rules are printed

Section 16.2 of the full Ozempic label covers storage and handling, and each carton includes Instructions for Use for the pen [1]. When you read them, look for three points: how to keep a pen you have not started, how long and how warm a pen in use may be kept, and when to throw it out. Ozempic comes as multi-dose pens and as single-dose prefilled syringes [1], and the rules can differ by device. Which pen delivers which dose is on Ozempic dosage.

Other drugs' labels, shown for comparison only

The rows below come from the labels of two other GLP-1 products. They are not Ozempic instructions, and they should not be used as Ozempic limits.

Heat, freezing and expired pens

The Wegovy and Zepbound labels both say a pen that has frozen should not be used [2] [3]; we could not confirm Ozempic's wording. If your Ozempic pen froze, sat in a hot car, or the liquid looks cloudy or colored, hold off and check the carton leaflet or call your pharmacist before injecting. Each pen and carton is stamped with an expiration date; past it, ask the pharmacy for a new pen. FDA is aware of counterfeit Ozempic in the US [4], so fill prescriptions only at a state-licensed pharmacy and report a pen that looks wrong.

Flying and road trips with Ozempic

  • Keep pens with you in the cabin, not in a checked bag, so they cannot freeze in the hold and you can keep an eye on the temperature.
  • Carry the carton or pharmacy label with your name on it, and look up current TSA guidance on medicines and needles before the trip.
  • If your carton leaflet gives a temperature range, an insulated pouch helps keep the pen inside it.
  • Shift your dose day around travel if needed: the label allows a new day as long as the two doses are more than 48 hours apart [1]. Injection steps are on how to use Ozempic.

What Ozempic is approved to do

Ozempic has three labeled uses, all in adults with type 2 diabetes: lowering blood sugar, cutting the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death when heart disease is present, and cutting kidney and cardiovascular risks when chronic kidney disease is present [1]. In SUSTAIN 6, major heart events occurred in 6.6% of people on Ozempic and 8.9% on placebo [1]. In the FLOW kidney trial, the hazard ratio for the combined kidney and heart outcome was 0.76 [1]. Weight loss is not a labeled use; the semaglutide brand approved for weight management is Wegovy [5]. Trial details are on Ozempic results.

We did not look into Ozempic patent dates for this page. For prices and savings, see Ozempic cost. The tirzepatide version of this page is Mounjaro storage.

Safety reminders

Ozempic has a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents [1]. Severe stomach pain that does not let up can be a sign of pancreatitis: stop Ozempic and call your prescriber [1]. For throat swelling or trouble breathing, call 911.

Questions people ask

Does Ozempic need to be refrigerated?

Ozempic's storage rules are in Section 16.2 of its label and the Instructions for Use in the carton [1]. We could not confirm them on October 17, 2026, so follow the carton leaflet or ask your pharmacist.

How long can Ozempic be out of the fridge?

We could not confirm Ozempic's limit, and another drug's limit should not be used in its place. For reference only, the Wegovy label lets its FlexTouch pen be kept at 59 to 86 F for up to 56 days after first use [2]. Check your Ozempic carton for Ozempic's own rule.

What happens if Ozempic freezes?

We could not confirm Ozempic's wording. The Wegovy and Zepbound labels say not to use a pen that has been frozen [2] [3]. Call your pharmacist before using an Ozempic pen that froze.

Can you bring Ozempic on a plane?

Yes. Keep pens with you on board, bring the pharmacy label, and read TSA guidance first. The label allows a new dose day if the two doses are more than 48 hours apart [1].

Does Ozempic expire?

Yes. The pen and carton carry an expiration date. After that date, do not use it; get a replacement from your pharmacy.

Is Ozempic good for your heart?

It is approved to lower major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In SUSTAIN 6, those events occurred in 6.6% on Ozempic vs 8.9% on placebo [1].

Is Ozempic good for kidneys?

It is approved to lower the risk of kidney decline, kidney failure and cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease [1]. The label also warns of kidney injury from dehydration [1].

Is Ozempic good for weight loss?

Ozempic is not approved for weight loss [1]. Wegovy, which contains semaglutide, is approved for weight management [5].
