Ozempic is Novo Nordisk's brand of semaglutide, a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist injection approved for adults with type 2 diabetes.
What Ozempic is
The label describes Ozempic as containing "semaglutide, a human GLP-1 receptor agonist (or GLP-1 analog)." The molecular weight is 4,113.58 g/mol [1]. Novo Nordisk makes it. Is Ozempic semaglutide? Yes. Is semaglutide always Ozempic? No: Wegovy is the same ingredient with a weight loss label [3]. Is GLP-1 the same as Ozempic? GLP-1 is a hormone and a drug class; Ozempic is one brand in that class. Ozempic is not tirzepatide, the ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound. Drug background: semaglutide.
Is Ozempic made from venom? No. The label says its peptide backbone is made by yeast fermentation and is modeled on human GLP-1 [1].
What Ozempic is used for
- Improving blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, with diet and exercise [1].
- Lowering the risk of major heart events in adults with type 2 diabetes and established heart disease [1].
- Lowering the risk of kidney decline, kidney failure and cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease [1].
Ozempic is not approved for weight loss [2]. The weight-labeled version of semaglutide is Wegovy. A prescriber can choose to use it off label; ask your plan how it handles that before you fill. Ozempic's indications are for adults and are based on type 2 diabetes, not on a BMI cutoff [1]. Compare: Ozempic vs Wegovy.
What Ozempic does in the body
"GLP-1 is a physiological hormone that has multiple actions on glucose." Semaglutide lowers blood sugar by stimulating insulin release, and it delays early stomach emptying after meals [1]. Peak levels come 1 to 3 days after a dose, the half-life is about 1 week, and levels settle after 4 to 5 weekly doses [1].
Is Ozempic insulin? No. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that prompts the body to release its own insulin [1]. Taking a GLP-1 medicine with insulin or a sulfonylurea raises the chance of low blood sugar, a warning on both the Wegovy and Zepbound labels [3][4]; ask whether those doses should change. More on the class: how GLP-1 medicines work.
Does Ozempic come in pill form?
NovoCare now lists Ozempic (semaglutide) tablets in 4 mg and 9 mg for adults with type 2 diabetes [2]. The same page shows self-pay prices of $149, $199 and $299 a month, but we could not confirm which price goes with which tablet dose. We did not review a tablet label. The Ozempic shot remains a weekly injection. For weight loss, the semaglutide pill is the Wegovy pill. Ozempic is not sold over the counter; it requires a prescription [2].
Doses
Start with 0.25 mg once a week for 4 weeks, then 0.5 mg. If more blood sugar control is needed, the dose can go to 1 mg and then 2 mg, each after at least 4 weeks on the current dose. For chronic kidney disease, the maintenance dose is 1 mg [1]. Inject in the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, using a different spot each week [1]. A missed dose can be taken within 5 days; after that, skip it [1]. Guides: Ozempic dosage, how to use Ozempic, Ozempic storage.

| Vomiting | 2.3% | 5.0% | 9.2% |

Semaglutide carries a boxed warning: it caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents, it is unknown whether it does in people, and it should not be used with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 [3]. For a planned pregnancy, Ozempic should be stopped at least 2 months ahead; in pregnancy it is used only if the benefit justifies the risk [1]. Is Ozempic addictive or a controlled substance? We found no label language on either. Medicine questions: Ozempic interactions.
Counterfeit Ozempic is real
FDA says it is aware of counterfeit Ozempic in the US that may contain the wrong ingredients or the wrong amount [5]. On September 29, 2026 the Justice Department announced charges against two people accused of smuggling and selling counterfeit Ozempic; these are allegations [6]. Buy only from a licensed pharmacy with a prescription.
Get care right away for
Severe stomach pain that will not go away (possible pancreatitis), swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing, or symptoms of low blood sugar if you also use insulin or a sulfonylurea [3]. Call 911 in an emergency.
What happens when you stop
We have no trial data on stopping Ozempic for diabetes. For semaglutide at the weight loss dose (2.4 mg), the STEP 1 extension found people regained about two-thirds of the weight lost within a year of stopping, and heart and metabolic gains mostly faded [7].
