Epitalon: Legal Status, Evidence and Safety

Epitalon is not legal to compound or sell as a drug in the US as of Oct 24, 2026: it is not FDA-approved and is not on Category 1 or the 503A bulks list [1].

On July 24, 2026, FDA's advisory committee voted to recommend allowing it for insomnia, by 7-4-1 in two law firm reports and 7-5-1 in a third, and FDA has not acted [2] [3] [4]. FDA's review found three small human studies, none reporting sleep outcomes, and flagged a theoretical cancer concern [5].

Epitalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide (alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine) modeled on a pineal gland extract called epithalamin and marketed for anti-aging [5].

Epitalon is sold as an anti-aging peptide that lengthens telomeres, the protective caps on chromosomes. That same property is what worries FDA. This page lays out the legal answer, the three human studies, and the cancer question.

Legal status of Epitalon

Waiting on FDA after a favorable vote

Epitalon won a favorable but nonbinding advisory committee vote in July 2026, and FDA has not acted on it [4]. It still cannot be legally compounded or sold as a drug [1].

FDA status
FDA removed it from Category 2 in April 2026 because the nominators withdrew their nominations [7]. That removal did not make it legal to compound [9]. FDA now lists it as "nominated but withdrawn," which is outside every category [8]. It is not in Category 1 and is not on the 503A bulks list, so a 503A pharmacy may not lawfully compound it today [1]. FDA's briefing found no sleep outcomes in the three small human studies and flags telomerase activation as a theoretical cancer concern [5].
Advisory committee
On July 24, 2026, the committee voted to recommend adding epitalon to the 503A bulks list. Two law firm reports give the count as 7 yes, 4 no and 1 abstain [2] [11]. A third, from ArentFox Schiff, reported 7 yes, 5 no and 1 abstain [3]. The committee reviewed it for insomnia [12]. FDA staff had recommended against listing it [5]. FDA has not posted its own vote count on the meeting page [12]. Advisory committee votes are not binding. Nothing changes until FDA acts [13].
FDA-approved products
None. We found no FDA-approved drug that contains Epitalon.
Sports (WADA)
Epitalon is not named on the 2026 list [15]. The list's S0 class covers substances with no approval by any government health authority for human use [15]. Whether that class covers Epitalon is a judgment call, so athletes should ask their anti-doping agency before use.
What happens next
To add it to the 503A bulks list, FDA must go through notice-and-comment rulemaking, starting with a proposed rule. FDA could also place it in Category 1 or announce enforcement discretion in the meantime [13]. As of Oct 16, 2026, FDA had not started rulemaking or moved any of these peptides to Category 1 [4]. HHS has sent an "Interim Access Policy for Compounding Using Certain Peptides" to the White House budget office for review. Holland & Knight dates that submission Oct 14, 2026 [4], while the AP reported it appeared on a government website on Oct 15 [18]. The policy has not been issued and its text is not public [4]; reporting on Oct 21, 2026 still described it as under review [19]. Reports say it would cover some popular peptides, but we could not confirm whether Epitalon is one of them [18]. One law firm says there is no reliable timetable for final action [13]. A drug safety group petitioned FDA on Oct 16, 2026 not to allow it [14].

FDA placed epitalon in Category 2, its safety-risk group, in 2023 and removed it in April 2026 when the nominators withdrew [6] [7]. Removal left it on a "nominated but withdrawn" list, which does not allow compounding [8] [9]. A pharmacy could use it only if it had a USP monograph, appeared in an approved drug or sat on the bulks list, and it has none of these [10] [1].

The July 24, 2026 committee vote was favorable, but the count is disputed: the FDA Law Blog and McDermott report 7 yes, 4 no and 1 abstain, while Arent Fox Schiff reported 7 yes, 5 no and 1 abstain [2] [11] [3]. FDA has not posted its own count [12]. Either way, the vote is advice. FDA would need a rule, a Category 1 listing or a statement of enforcement discretion before any pharmacy could use it [13].

Since then: an interim peptide access policy went to the White House budget office in October 2026, with no public text [4], and a citizen petition filed Oct 16, 2026 asks FDA not to allow epitalon or six other peptides [14].

Epitalon vs epithalamin

The two names get mixed up. Epithalamin is an extract of the pineal gland. Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide designed from epithalamin's amino acid content, and FDA treats them as "different substances" [5]. Older research on epithalamin is not research on epitalon.

Three small human studies, no sleep data

FDA reviewed epitalon for insomnia, injected under the skin, as the nominators proposed [5]. The human record it found:

  • A randomized, placebo-controlled study in women aged 40 to 50, mostly night-shift workers, that gave a related tetrapeptide under the tongue; 75 women enrolled [5].
  • A second under-the-tongue study in night-shift workers, with no sample size given in FDA's summary [5].
  • An injection near the eye in people with retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited eye disease [5].

None tested the proposed injection for insomnia, and none reported sleep outcomes [5]. FDA's conclusion: "there is a lack of evidence to support the effectiveness of epitalon" for insomnia, and "there are no clinical data to support the safety" of epitalon in humans [5].

The telomere question

FDA wrote that "epitalon has been shown to activate telomerase and lengthen telomeres" in lab work, and that "longer telomeres are generally associated with increased risk for cancer" [5]. FDA warned that chronic, continuous exposure "could result in carcinogenicity" [5]. FDA also said the animal studies available, which used fixed doses, female mice only and short exposures, do not settle the question [5].

In other words, the feature sellers advertise and the risk FDA names are the same mechanism. No human study has measured cancer outcomes either way.

Epitalon benefits: claims vs findings

Common epitalon claims and what FDA's 2026 review found
ClaimWhat FDA found
Improves sleepThree small human studies; none reported sleep outcomes [5]
Slows aging by lengthening telomeresTelomerase activation shown in lab work; FDA calls it a theoretical cancer concern [5]
Safe because it is naturalIt is synthetic, and FDA found no clinical safety data in humans [5]
Pharmacy gradeFDA says it is not well characterized, with missing impurity, aggregate and endotoxin data [5]

Talk to your doctor first

If you have had cancer or have a family history of it, raise epitalon with your doctor before using it, given FDA's telomerase concern [5]. FDA is also concerned about immune reactions to injected forms [5]. Trouble breathing or throat swelling after an injection: call 911.

Epitalon and anti-doping

Epitalon is not named on the 2026 WADA list [15]. Its S0 class covers substances with no approval for human use by any government health authority [15]. We found no such approval for epitalon, but whether S0 covers it is the anti-doping agency's call.

There is no legal way to buy Epitalon today

There is no legal way to buy Epitalon for human use in the US today. A 503A pharmacy may not compound it, and no FDA-approved drug contains it [1]. Products labeled "research use only" are not a legal workaround; FDA has rejected that label in warning letters to online sellers [16].

"Research use only" vials are not a legal route; FDA has rejected that label [16]. For legal ways to measure aging markers, see our longevity guide and biological age tests. For other peptides, see the peptide FDA status tracker, Semax from the same session, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin, also sold for anti-aging, BPC-157 and the legal peptide price tracker.

What changed for epitalon

  • : The Partnership for Safe Medicines filed a citizen petition asking FDA not to allow compounding of this and six other peptides, by rule, Category 1 placement or enforcement discretion [14].
  • : HHS sent an interim peptide access policy to the White House budget office for review, per Holland & Knight [4]. The AP reported it appeared on Oct 15 [18]. It has not been issued [4].
  • : On July 24, 2026, the committee voted to recommend adding epitalon to the 503A bulks list. Two law firm reports give the count as 7 yes, 4 no and 1 abstain [2] [11]. A third, from ArentFox Schiff, reported 7 yes, 5 no and 1 abstain [3].
  • : FDA staff briefing documents recommended against adding it to the 503A bulks list [5].
  • : The removal took effect around this date. FDA now lists it as nominated but withdrawn, which does not allow compounding [8] [9].
  • : FDA gave seven days' notice that it would remove 12 peptides, including this one, from Category 2 because the nominators withdrew [7].
  • : FDA placed it in Category 2, citing significant safety risks [6].

The other peptides FDA's committee weighed in July 2026: TB-500, KPV, MOTS-c, Semax and DSIP. For approved peptide drugs, see PT-141 and SS-31.

How we check

We read FDA's epitalon briefing and categories document, and rechecked FDA's compounding and advisory committee pages on Oct 24, 2026 [1] [17]. Where reports disagree, as on the vote count, we show both. We do not link to sellers. See our editorial standards.

Questions people ask

Is epitalon legal?

Not as a drug in the US as of Oct 24, 2026. It is not in Category 1 or on the 503A bulks list, so a pharmacy may not compound it [1]. A committee voted in favor on July 24, 2026, by 7-4-1 or 7-5-1 depending on the report, but the vote is nonbinding [2] [3].

What are the benefits of epitalon?

None is established in people. FDA found three small human studies, none reporting sleep outcomes, and concluded there is a lack of evidence that it works for insomnia [5].

Does epitalon cause cancer?

No human study has measured that. FDA wrote that epitalon activates telomerase and lengthens telomeres in lab work, that longer telomeres are generally linked to higher cancer risk, and that chronic exposure could result in carcinogenicity [5].

Is epitalon the same as epithalamin?

No. Epithalamin is a pineal gland extract; epitalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide based on it, and FDA treats them as different substances [5].

What are epitalon side effects?

There are no reliable rates. FDA found no clinical safety data and flagged possible immune reactions to injected forms and the telomerase cancer concern [5].

Is epitalon banned in sports?

It is not named on the 2026 WADA list, but the S0 class covers substances with no government approval for human use, so ask your anti-doping agency [15].

What is the epitalon dosage?

There is no FDA-reviewed dose, and FDA found no clinical safety data for epitalon in humans [5]. We do not publish dosing or cycles for unapproved peptides.
