KPV Peptide: Legal Status and What the Research Shows

KPV is not legal to compound or sell as a drug in the US as of Oct 24, 2026, because it is not FDA-approved and is not on any list FDA lets pharmacies use [1].

An FDA advisory committee voted 8 to 6, with 1 abstention, on July 23, 2026 to recommend allowing it for wound healing and inflammatory conditions, but FDA has not acted on that advice [2] [3]. FDA's review found no data from any person given KPV [4].

KPV is a three-amino-acid peptide (lysine, proline, valine) taken from the tail of the hormone alpha-MSH, studied so far only in lab and animal models [4].

Legal status of KPV

Waiting on FDA after a favorable vote

KPV won a favorable but nonbinding advisory committee vote in July 2026, and FDA has not acted on it [3]. It still cannot be legally compounded or sold as a drug [1].

FDA status
FDA removed it from Category 2 in April 2026 because the nominators withdrew their nominations [7]. That removal did not make it legal to compound [9]. FDA now lists it as "nominated but withdrawn," which is outside every category [8]. It is not in Category 1 and is not on the 503A bulks list, so a 503A pharmacy may not lawfully compound it today [1]. FDA found no clinical trials or human drug level data for KPV, only lab and animal data [4].
Advisory committee
On July 23, 2026, the committee voted 8 yes, 6 no and 1 abstain to recommend adding KPV to the 503A bulks list [2] [10]. The committee reviewed it for wound healing and inflammatory conditions [15]. FDA staff had recommended against listing it [4]. FDA has not posted its own vote count on the meeting page [15]. Advisory committee votes are not binding. Nothing changes until FDA acts [5].
FDA-approved products
None. We found no FDA-approved drug that contains KPV.
Sports (WADA)
KPV is not named on the 2026 list [13]. The list's S0 class covers substances with no approval by any government health authority for human use [13]. Whether that class covers KPV is a judgment call, so athletes should ask their anti-doping agency before use.
What happens next
To add it to the 503A bulks list, FDA must go through notice-and-comment rulemaking, starting with a proposed rule. FDA could also place it in Category 1 or announce enforcement discretion in the meantime [5]. As of Oct 16, 2026, FDA had not started rulemaking or moved any of these peptides to Category 1 [3]. HHS has sent an "Interim Access Policy for Compounding Using Certain Peptides" to the White House budget office for review. Holland & Knight dates that submission Oct 14, 2026 [3], while the AP reported it appeared on a government website on Oct 15 [11]. The policy has not been issued and its text is not public [3]; reporting on Oct 21, 2026 still described it as under review [17]. Reports say it would cover some popular peptides, but we could not confirm whether KPV is one of them [11]. One law firm says there is no reliable timetable for final action [5]. A drug safety group petitioned FDA on Oct 16, 2026 not to allow it [12].

KPV in plain words

FDA's briefing calls KPV "a tripeptide composed of the amino acids lysine (K), proline (P), and valine (V)," a fragment of alpha-MSH, a hormone made in the pituitary gland [4]. The nomination proposed a 0.1% cream or gel for wound healing and inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis and eczema [4]. Online, sellers market it in other forms and for other uses, including the gut. None of those products has been reviewed by FDA as a drug [1].

Can a doctor prescribe KPV?

A doctor can write anything on a prescription, but a pharmacy may not lawfully fill it with KPV. Federal law limits 503A pharmacies to bulk ingredients that have a USP or NF monograph, are part of an approved drug, or are on FDA's bulks list [6]. KPV has none of these, and it is not in Category 1, the only interim group FDA leaves alone [1].

KPV was one of 12 peptides FDA took out of its Category 2 safety-risk group in April 2026 because the nominators withdrew [7]. That step moved it to a "nominated but withdrawn" list, which allows nothing [8] [9]. Then came the July vote, which law firm reports put at 8-6-1 [2] [10]. FDA staff had recommended against it [4].

What would change it

FDA would have to issue a proposed rule, place KPV in Category 1, or announce that it will not enforce against pharmacies compounding it [5]. As of Oct 16, 2026 it had done none of these [3]. An interim access policy reached the White House budget office in mid-October; reports say it covers some popular peptides, but we could not confirm KPV is one of them [11] [3]. A drug safety group filed a citizen petition on Oct 16, 2026 asking FDA to hold off on KPV and six other peptides [12].

The evidence: lab dishes and animals

FDA summarized the record as "nonclinical pharmacological studies suggesting that KPV-related BDSs can have antiinflammatory and wound-healing properties in in-vivo and in-vitro models" [4]. Put simply: some anti-inflammatory and healing signals in cells and animals. FDA added that KPV's molecular targets "remain unknown" [4].

On people, the briefing is short: "FDA did not find information on products containing KPV (free base) or KPV acetate administered in humans" [4]. FDA wrote that it was particularly concerned about that gap [4].

Why a cream may not reach its target

One finding cuts both ways. In a lab test on human cadaver skin, KPV did not pass through the skin well [4]. FDA noted that this could limit whole-body side effects, and also limit whether a cream works at all [4]. For a product nominated as a skin cream, that is a basic open question.

Known and unknown risks

FDA wrote that "potential safety risks associated with the use in humans are unknown" and that data on immune reactions and clumping (aggregation) are insufficient [4]. FDA's safety page adds that it has not identified any human exposure data on products containing KPV [8]. Without a human study, no seller can tell you the side effect rate.

Before you use any KPV product

Tell your doctor, especially if you have inflammatory bowel disease or a skin condition already under treatment. FDA found no human safety data [4]. Signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as throat swelling or trouble breathing, need emergency care. Call 911.

KPV and anti-doping rules

KPV is not named on the 2026 WADA Prohibited List [13]. The list's S0 class covers any substance with no approval from any government health authority for human use [13]. KPV has no such approval that we found, so it may fall under S0, but that is a judgment for the anti-doping agency. Athletes should ask theirs before using it.

There is no legal way to buy KPV today

There is no legal way to buy KPV for human use in the US today. A 503A pharmacy may not compound it, and no FDA-approved drug contains it [1]. Products labeled "research use only" are not a legal workaround; FDA has rejected that label in warning letters to online sellers [14].

Products sold as "research use only" are not a legal workaround; FDA rejected that label in a 2025 warning letter [14]. KPV also appears in four-peptide blends; see our KLOW page. For the other peptides from the same July vote, see BPC-157; for another peptide marketed for inflammation and immunity, see LL-37 and our peptide FDA status tracker. Peptides that can be prescribed today are on the legal peptide price tracker, and FDA-approved options for gut and skin conditions are a question for your doctor. How this page is checked

We read FDA's categories document, the KPV briefing and FDA's advisory committee pages, and we rechecked them on Oct 24, 2026 [1] [15]. Vote counts come from law firm and trade reports because FDA has not posted minutes [2]. We do not link to sellers. See our editorial standards.

Questions people ask

Is KPV legal?

Not as a drug in the US as of Oct 24, 2026. KPV is not in Category 1 or on the 503A bulks list, so a pharmacy may not compound it, and no FDA-approved drug contains it [1]. The July 23, 2026 committee vote of 8-6-1 in favor is not binding [2] [5].

What are the benefits of KPV?

None has been shown in people. FDA found anti-inflammatory and wound-healing signals only in cell and animal studies, and no data from any human given KPV [4].

What are KPV side effects?

There are no human side effect data. FDA wrote in May 2026 that potential safety risks in humans are unknown and that immune reaction data are insufficient [4].

Does KPV work for gut inflammation?

No human study shows that. FDA's 2026 review found only lab and animal data, and the nomination it reviewed was for a skin cream, not a gut treatment [4].

Does a KPV cream absorb through skin?

Poorly, in the one test FDA cited. In a lab study on human cadaver skin, KPV did not permeate well, which FDA said could limit both side effects and effectiveness [4].

Is KPV banned by WADA?

It is not named on the 2026 list [13]. WADA's S0 class covers substances with no government approval for human use, so athletes should ask their anti-doping agency before using it [13].

What is the KPV dose?

There is no FDA-reviewed dose. FDA found no human data at all, so doses sold online are not based on clinical testing [4]. We do not publish dosing for unapproved peptides.
