Melanotan 2: Legal Status and Safety Risks

No: Melanotan II is not FDA-approved, and as of Oct 24, 2026 a US pharmacy may not lawfully compound it [1].

FDA cites "published case reports" of serious adverse events in people who used it, including melanoma [2]. It is on the list for an FDA advisory committee review planned before the end of February 2027, with no date set [3] [4].

Melanotan II is a synthetic peptide sold online as a tanning injection or nasal spray; it has no FDA approval for any use [2] [1].

Legal status of Melanotan II

Under FDA review

Melanotan II is waiting for an FDA advisory committee review planned before the end of February 2027 [13] [4]. Until FDA acts, it cannot be legally compounded [9].

FDA status
FDA removed it from Category 2 in April 2026 because the nominators withdrew their nominations [8]. That removal did not make it legal to compound [9]. FDA now lists it as "nominated but withdrawn," which is outside every category [2]. It is not in Category 1 and is not on the 503A bulks list, so a 503A pharmacy may not lawfully compound it today [1]. FDA cites published case reports of serious adverse events, including melanoma [2].
Advisory committee
Not yet reviewed. It is one of five peptides FDA plans to bring to the committee: GHK-Cu, LL-37, dihexa, Melanotan II and PEG-MGF [13]. That review is expected before the end of February 2027 [13] [4]. No date had been set as of Oct 16, 2026 [4].
FDA-approved products
None. We found no FDA-approved drug that contains Melanotan II.
Sports (WADA)
Melanotan II is not named on the 2026 list [11]. The list's S0 class covers substances with no approval by any government health authority for human use [11]. Whether that class covers Melanotan II is a judgment call, so athletes should ask their anti-doping agency before use.
What happens next
FDA plans to bring it to its Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee before the end of February 2027, according to law firm reports [13] [4]. No meeting date had been set as of Oct 16, 2026 [4]. Even a favorable vote would not be binding. FDA would still have to act through rulemaking or another formal step [10].

Not as a drug. A 503A pharmacy may compound from a bulk substance only if it has a USP or NF monograph, is part of an FDA-approved drug, or is on FDA's bulks list [6]. Melanotan II has none of these and is not in Category 1 [1]. FDA put it in Category 2 in 2023 for safety risks and removed it in April 2026 only because the nominators withdrew [7] [8]. A pharmacy law firm noted that removal "does not render these bulk drug substances eligible for compounding" [9].

The next step is a review. FDA's advisory committee page lists a meeting before the end of February 2027 on Melanotan II, LL-37, GHK-Cu, dihexa acetate and PEG-MGF [3]. Committee votes are advice; FDA then decides [10].

Tanning injections and nasal sprays

Melanotan II is marketed online for tanning, including as injections and nasal sprays, often labeled for research. FDA has reviewed none of these products, and none is legal to compound [1].

Case reports FDA cites

FDA's safety page says "published case reports discuss serious adverse events including melanoma" with Melanotan II [2]. FDA's listing also names:

  • Melanoma, a serious skin cancer [2].
  • Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), a brain swelling syndrome [2].
  • Sympathomimetic toxidrome, a reaction in which the body's fight-or-flight system is overstimulated [2].
  • Priapism, an erection that will not go away [2].

Case reports show that harm happened to individual people; they cannot tell you how often. No controlled trial gives a Melanotan II side effect rate. The pattern is serious enough that FDA put these reports on its safety page.

Get care now for these signs

An erection that will not go away, a sudden severe headache, a seizure, vision changes or chest pain after using Melanotan II: call 911. Have a dermatologist check any new or changing mole, and tell them you used it, given the melanoma case reports [2].

Melanotan II is not Vyleesi

Bremelanotide, sold as Vyleesi, is an FDA-approved drug. Its label limits it to premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder and says it is not for men or for enhancing sexual performance [5]. Its label lists focal darkening of the skin in 1% of patients as a warning, not a goal [5]. It is not a tanning product. Details are on our PT-141 page.

Melanotan II and sports

WADA's 2026 list does not name Melanotan II [11]. Its S0 section, for substances no regulator has approved for therapeutic use in people, is broad [11], and Melanotan II has no such approval that we found. An athlete thinking about a tanning product should ask the anti-doping agency first.

There is no legal way to buy Melanotan II today

There is no legal way to buy Melanotan II for human use in the US today. A 503A pharmacy may not compound it, and no FDA-approved drug contains it [1]. Products labeled "research use only" are not a legal workaround; FDA has rejected that label in warning letters to online sellers [12].

Legal options that exist today

  • PT-141 (bremelanotide): the FDA-approved drug Vyleesi, approved only for low sexual desire in premenopausal women; it is not a tanning drug

FDA has rejected "research use only" labels as a legal shield in warning letters to peptide sellers [12]. See the full peptide FDA status tracker, the other 2027 review candidates GHK-Cu and LL-37, BPC-157, the legal peptide price tracker and FDA warning letters.

Melanotan II timeline

  • : The removal took effect around this date. FDA now lists it as nominated but withdrawn, which does not allow compounding [2] [9].
  • : A law firm report said the advisory committee will meet before the end of February 2027 to review it and four other peptides [13].
  • : FDA gave seven days' notice that it would remove 12 peptides, including this one, from Category 2 because the nominators withdrew [8].
  • : FDA placed it in Category 2, citing significant safety risks [7].

How we check

FDA's safety-risk page is the source for every harm listed here, and we quote it rather than secondary summaries [2]. On Oct 24, 2026 we also rechecked the categories document and meeting notice [1] [3]. Vyleesi facts are from its label only [5]. Tanning product sellers are not linked. See editorial standards.

Questions people ask

Is Melanotan 2 legal?

No. Melanotan II has never been FDA-approved, and since FDA moved it out of Category 2 in April 2026 it has sat on a nominated but withdrawn list that permits no compounding [8] [2]. Tanning injections and sprays sold online are not legal drugs [1].

Does Melanotan 2 cause cancer?

FDA cites published case reports of serious adverse events in users, including melanoma [2]. Case reports cannot show how often it happens or prove cause, and no controlled trial has measured cancer risk.

What are Melanotan 2 side effects?

FDA's safety page cites case reports of melanoma, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, sympathomimetic toxidrome and priapism [2]. There are no controlled side effect rates.

Is Melanotan 2 the same as PT-141?

No. PT-141 is bremelanotide, FDA-approved as Vyleesi only for premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder [5]. Melanotan II has no approval [1].

Are Melanotan nasal sprays legal?

No. FDA has reviewed no Melanotan II product in any form, and it may not be compounded [1]. Research-use-only labels are not a legal route [12].

When will FDA review Melanotan 2?

FDA plans an advisory committee meeting on it and four other substances before the end of February 2027; no date has been set [3] [4].
