Medical weight loss in Sacramento

Since January 1, 2026, Medi-Cal no longer covers GLP-1 drugs for weight loss in adults, so many Sacramento patients now pay cash [1]. On Oct 17, 2026, the makers' prices ran from $149 a month for the lowest-dose Wegovy pill up to $449 for the higher Zepbound doses [2] [3].

What the Medi-Cal change means in Sacramento

California's 2025 to 2026 budget ended Medi-Cal coverage of GLP-1 drugs for adult weight loss effective January 1, 2026. Members under 21 are still covered, and GLP-1s prescribed for other conditions can be covered when medically necessary [1]. KFF lists California among four states that dropped obesity coverage after October 2025 [7].

The change lands on a large group. CDC PLACES estimates that 30.0% of Sacramento adults had obesity in 2023, and 11.2% had diagnosed diabetes [4]. The city had 536,449 residents in mid-2025 [6].

Both daily tablets, the Wegovy pill and Lilly's Foundayo, open at $149 a month [2] [8]. Those are starting strengths, so the bill climbs as the dose is raised. Pill versus pill: Foundayo vs Wegovy pill.

Coverage that still exists

  • Medi-Cal members under 21: weight loss coverage continues [1], and the Wegovy injection is approved from age 12 [9].
  • Medi-Cal and type 2 diabetes: uses other than weight loss can still be paid for when medically necessary [1].
  • Medicare Part D: through December 31, 2027, the GLP-1 Bridge charges a $50 copay for the Zepbound KwikPen, Foundayo or Wegovy if you meet its BMI and health rules [10] [11].
  • Job-based insurance: read the formulary. When the plan covers the drug, Wegovy and Zepbound savings offers can cut the cost to $25 [2] [12].

Choosing a Sacramento prescriber

The Medical Board of California runs a public license search for physicians [13]. A cheap compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide offer deserves caution: compounded versions lack FDA approval, and FDA does not judge their safety, effectiveness or quality [14]. Screen with our clinic checklist and FDA warning letter tracker. Sacramento drug pages: tirzepatide and semaglutide.

Lasting, severe pain in the abdomen may be pancreatitis. Sulfonylureas or insulin raise the odds of low blood sugar. Zepbound is stopped once pregnancy is recognized [15] [9]. Throat swelling or trouble breathing calls for 911.
