Medical weight loss is obesity treatment led by a licensed prescriber, which may include FDA-approved medicine, nutrition care and follow-up labs.
Lower rates, same price problem
King County's adult obesity estimate was 22.6% in 2023, and diagnosed diabetes 7.3% [4]. Those are well below Harris County, Texas, at 37.3% and 13.2% [7]. Lower prevalence does not make treatment cheaper: in a city of 784,777 people [5], more than one in five adults in the county still qualifies by the obesity measure alone, and the drugs cost the same here as anywhere else when you pay cash.

How Seattle patients usually get started
UW Medicine and Swedish are the two large systems in our research [8][9]. We could not find a published UW or Swedish weight management program page during this update, so we do not describe one. UW Medicine does promote same-day virtual primary care with a UW Medicine doctor [10], which can be a starting point for a weight conversation, a referral, or a prescription if your doctor thinks one fits.
- Ask your primary care doctor whether you meet the label criteria for a weight medicine.
- Check your plan's drug list for Wegovy, Zepbound or Foundayo.
- If it is not covered, compare manufacturer cash prices before a clinic's package price.
- Confirm the prescriber's license with the Washington Medical Commission [6].
Cash prices for the brand drugs
| Drug | Monthly price | Form | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundayo (orforglipron) | $149 to $299 | Daily pill | [11] |
| Wegovy pill | $149 to $299 | Daily pill | [1] |
| Wegovy pen | $349 | Weekly injection | [1] |
| Zepbound | $299 to $449 | Weekly injection, vial or KwikPen | [2] |
Foundayo's 2.5 mg and 5.5 mg prices are temporarily reduced through December 31, 2026 [11]. The complete list is on our GLP-1 cost page, with details in Foundayo price and doses and Foundayo vs Wegovy pill.
Insurance in Washington
Washington is not among the state Medicaid programs KFF counts as covering GLP-1s for obesity as of January 2026 [3]. For Medicare Part D members who meet the BMI and health criteria, the GLP-1 Bridge sets a $50 copay from July 2026 through 2027 [12]. Employer coverage varies; Lilly cites survey data that about half of people with employer insurance lack obesity drug coverage [13].
Red flags in Seattle ads
Washington law bars healing-profession practitioners from paying rebates or fees for patient referrals [14]. Also be wary of programs that call compounded drugs generic or the same as Wegovy or Zepbound. Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [15]. Our warning letter tracker lists companies FDA has cited.
Know the warning signs
Severe stomach pain that does not go away can be pancreatitis: stop the medicine and get care. Seek help for swelling, rash or trouble breathing. Insulin or sulfonylurea users face a higher risk of low blood sugar. GLP-1 injections carry a thyroid C-cell tumor boxed warning from animal studies [16][17]. Call 911 in an emergency.
