How we check

What to eat and drink on Semaglutide

The semaglutide label sections we checked do not set an alcohol limit, so there is no label rule that one drink is safe or unsafe. Ask your prescriber, especially if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, because the label warns those raise the risk of low blood sugar with semaglutide [1].

Medical review: pending. A licensed clinician has not yet reviewed this page.

Eating and drinking on semaglutide means choosing food, fluids and alcohol around a medicine that slows stomach emptying and commonly causes nausea, per its label.

Alcohol rule in label
None found in the sections we checked [1]
Low blood sugar, type 2 diabetes
6.2% vs 2.5% on placebo [1]
Nausea (2.4 mg)
44% vs 16% on placebo [1]
Wegovy tablets
Wait 30 minutes before food or drinks other than water [1]

What we could and could not confirm

This page sticks to what the FDA labels say. Protein targets, calorie numbers and alcohol limits are not in the semaglutide label sections we reviewed, and the 2025 nutrition advisory figures were not available to us for this update. We say so where it matters.

Alcohol and semaglutide

We found no alcohol limit in the Wegovy or Ozempic label sections we checked. That is not the same as a green light. Two label warnings are worth knowing before you drink:

  • Low blood sugar. In type 2 diabetes, clinically significant low blood sugar occurred in 6.2% of people on Wegovy vs 2.5% on placebo, and the label says the risk rises with insulin or a sulfonylurea, whose dose may need lowering [1].
  • Dehydration. The label warns of kidney injury from fluid loss when vomiting or diarrhea is severe (Section 5.5) [1], and the Wegovy Medication Guide says drinking fluids helps lower the chance of dehydration [4]. Anything that adds to fluid loss is worth raising with your prescriber.

Whether semaglutide reduces alcohol cravings is not a labeled use, and we did not find trial data on it in our sources.

Blood sugar: who needs to watch it

The Wegovy label's low blood sugar warning centers on people with type 2 diabetes, particularly those on insulin or sulfonylureas [1]. We did not find a rate for people without diabetes in the label sections we reviewed. Ozempic is approved to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes [2].

If you already have episodes of low blood sugar, tell your prescriber before starting. In an emergency, call 911. For medicine combinations, see semaglutide interactions.

What to eat, and what to go easy on

The labels do not give a semaglutide diet. They do tell you what the drug does to digestion: it slows stomach emptying [1], and nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion and bloating are common [1]. Eggs, bananas and coffee are not restricted by the label.

For a meal framework, see our GLP-1 diet plan. For protein and keeping muscle while losing weight, see keeping muscle on a GLP-1. Protein grams, fiber targets, calorie counts and vitamins are not set by the semaglutide label.

Eating to limit nausea

The label's main lever for nausea is dose pacing: a prescriber can delay the next dose increase by 4 weeks if a step is not tolerated [1]. If you cannot keep food or fluids down, call your prescriber. More in semaglutide side effects.

Pill timing: coffee, water and breakfast

If you take Wegovy tablets, food and drink timing matters. Take the tablet in the morning on an empty stomach with no more than 4 ounces of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water (coffee included) or taking other pills [1]. Injections have no meal timing rule in the label; the time of day can change without a dose change [1]. For the Wegovy injection, the Medication Guide says it can be taken with or without food [4].

Exercise and eating what you want

The STEP 1 trial reported an average 14.9% weight loss at 68 weeks on semaglutide 2.4 mg [3]. We could not confirm from the abstract what diet and exercise advice participants received, so we cannot say how much weight people lose without changes to food or activity. Working out right after an injection is not addressed in the label. Results data is in semaglutide results; the Wegovy-specific version is what to eat on Wegovy.

Call for help

Severe stomach pain that does not go away can be pancreatitis; stop the medicine and call your prescriber [4]. Confusion, fainting or seizure from low blood sugar is an emergency: call 911.

Questions people ask

Can you drink alcohol on semaglutide?

The label sections we checked set no alcohol limit, so there is no label rule either way. The label does warn about low blood sugar with insulin or sulfonylureas and kidney injury from fluid loss, so ask your prescriber [1].

Can semaglutide cause low blood sugar?

Yes, mainly in type 2 diabetes: 6.2% on Wegovy had clinically significant low blood sugar vs 2.5% on placebo, with higher risk alongside insulin or sulfonylureas [1].

Does semaglutide lower blood sugar?

Yes. Ozempic, which is semaglutide, is approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes [2].

What should I eat on semaglutide?

The label has no diet. It says semaglutide slows stomach emptying and that nausea and other stomach effects are common [1]. Our GLP-1 diet plan covers food choices.

How much protein should I eat on semaglutide?

The semaglutide label does not set a protein target, and we could not confirm the 2025 nutrition advisory figures for this update. Ask your prescriber or a registered dietitian.

Can you drink coffee on semaglutide?

With injections, the label has no coffee rule. With Wegovy tablets, wait at least 30 minutes after the tablet before drinking anything other than water [1].

Can you lose weight on semaglutide without exercise?

We could not confirm the lifestyle advice given in STEP 1, where people on 2.4 mg lost an average 14.9% at 68 weeks [3]. So we cannot say what happens without exercise.

What foods should I avoid on semaglutide?

The label lists no banned foods. It does list nausea, vomiting and indigestion as common reactions [1], so notice which meals make them worse and tell your prescriber.

Can eating too much on semaglutide make you sick?

The label does not address meal size. It says semaglutide slows stomach emptying and that nausea affected 44% on 2.4 mg vs 16% on placebo [1].
