Wegovy interactions are medicines and health conditions that the Wegovy label says can change its safety or effect, or that Wegovy can affect.
- What Wegovy is approved for
- Weight, heart risk, MASH (injection) [1]
- Type 2 diabetes control
- Not a Wegovy use; that is Ozempic's approval [2]
- Other GLP-1 medicines
- Combining is not recommended [1]
- Levothyroxine plus the pill
- Exposure 33% higher [1]
- Planning a pregnancy
- Come off it at least 2 months before [1]
Is Wegovy a diabetes drug?
The Wegovy label has no blood sugar indication, and we found no A1C figures in the label text open to us. It does carry warnings written for people with type 2 diabetes, including low blood sugar and complications of diabetic retinopathy [1], which shows people with diabetes may use it for weight or heart risk. Type 1 diabetes is not covered in the sections we read; ask your endocrinologist.
Diabetes is not a requirement: Wegovy is approved for weight reduction from age 12 [1]. For a brand-by-brand look, see Ozempic vs Wegovy.
Drug pairings the Wegovy label calls out
| If you take | Label guidance |
|---|---|
| Another semaglutide product or any GLP-1 receptor agonist | Not recommended together [1] |
| Insulin or a sulfonylurea | Low blood sugar risk goes up; a lower dose of those drugs may be considered [1] |
| Any medicine swallowed by mouth | Slower stomach emptying may change how it is absorbed [1] |
| Levothyroxine, alongside the Wegovy pill | 33% higher exposure; monitoring advised [1] |
| Other pills on a Wegovy tablet morning | Hold them at least 30 minutes after the tablet [1] |
Phentermine, metformin, ibuprofen or Tylenol? The Wegovy label facts we checked name none of them. Silence is not a safety finding; it only means the label gives no specific advice. Have your prescriber and pharmacist go through everything you take.
The pill and birth control. No contraceptive-specific statement turned up in our sources. Because birth control pills are taken by mouth, the general absorption caution covers them [1]. Wegovy itself does not prevent pregnancy.
Pregnancy, conception and breastfeeding
Wegovy may harm a developing baby. Stop it once a pregnancy is known, and plan to stop at least 2 months before trying to conceive [1] [3]. In practice, that means counting 2 months from your last dose before a planned pregnancy. The tablet is not recommended while breastfeeding; for the pen, no human milk data exist [1]. Effects on fertility are not covered in the label sections we read.
Blood pressure readings and heart health
The Wegovy label sections we read give no blood pressure results, so we cannot say which way it moves your readings. High blood pressure is not listed as a reason to avoid Wegovy in our sources. Stay on your blood pressure medicine as prescribed and keep checking at home.
On the heart side, FDA approved Wegovy to cut the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke in adults who have heart disease plus obesity or overweight. In the SELECT trial, 6.5% on Wegovy had a major heart event compared with 8% on placebo [4]. Resting pulse rose 1 to 4 beats per minute on average [1].
Kidney, liver and thyroid conditions
Kidneys. The label warns of acute kidney injury when vomiting or diarrhea causes dehydration [1]. Liver. The injection has accelerated approval for noncirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis (F2 to F3) [1]. Thyroid. Anyone with MEN 2, or with medullary thyroid carcinoma in themselves or their family, should not use Wegovy [1]. If levothyroxine treats an underactive thyroid, remember the 33% exposure rise seen with the pill [1].
Inflammation or insulin resistance? Neither is an approved use, and our sources hold no data on either.
Procedures, anesthesia and sedation
Under general anesthesia or deep sedation, Wegovy may raise the chance of stomach contents reaching the lungs. The label says the evidence is too thin to recommend pausing Wegovy or changing fasting, and asks patients to tell their care team before any planned procedure [1]. Questions people ask
Is Wegovy for diabetes?
What medicine should you not take with Wegovy?
The label advises against combining it with other semaglutide products or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist, and calls for extra care with insulin or sulfonylureas because of low blood sugar [1].
Can you take Wegovy and metformin together?
The Wegovy label facts we checked do not name metformin. Its specific blood sugar caution is about insulin and sulfonylureas [1]. Your prescriber decides.
Can you take phentermine with Wegovy?
Phentermine does not appear in the label facts we checked, so the label offers no guidance on the pair. That decision rests with your prescriber [1].
Can you take Wegovy while pregnant?
No. Wegovy may harm a developing baby. Stop once pregnancy is known, and at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy [1].
Can you take Wegovy while breastfeeding?
The Wegovy tablet is not recommended during breastfeeding, and there are no human milk data for the injection [1].
Does Wegovy affect birth control?
Wegovy may change how oral medicines are absorbed, per its label [1]. We found nothing specific to contraceptives, so ask your prescriber about your method.
Does Wegovy affect the kidneys?
It can. The label warns of acute kidney injury from dehydration after vomiting or diarrhea [1].
Is Wegovy approved for NASH?
Yes, for the injection: it has accelerated approval for noncirrhotic MASH, the current name for NASH, with moderate to advanced fibrosis [1].
