How we check

Medical weight loss in Indianapolis

Nearly two in five Indianapolis adults have obesity, 38.2% in CDC estimates [1], one of the higher rates among large US cities we cover. Indiana Medicaid does not pay for GLP-1 drugs for obesity [2], so cash prices, which start at $149 a month for brand pills as of Oct 17, 2026, often decide what people use [3].

Medical weight loss is supervised treatment for obesity that may include prescription medicine, nutrition and activity plans, and regular check-ins with a licensed clinician.

Nearly two in five adults

CDC PLACES estimates adult obesity at 38.2% and diagnosed diabetes at 13.0% for Indianapolis in 2023 [1]. Marion County as a whole is almost identical, at 38.3% obesity and 13.0% diabetes [4]. A high local rate does not mean medicine is right for any one person; a prescriber weighs your BMI, conditions and goals.

A note on "city (balance)"

Census and CDC report Indianapolis as "city (balance)", which leaves out separately incorporated towns inside Marion County [5]. That is why the city population is 901,116 rather than the full county figure [5]. If you live in one of those towns, the Marion County numbers fit you better.

Paying for treatment in Indiana

Indiana was not on KFF's January 2026 list of 13 Medicaid programs covering GLP-1s for obesity [2]. Lilly, citing an IFEBP survey, says about half of people with employer coverage lack coverage for obesity drugs [6]. Medicare Part D enrollees who meet BMI criteria can use the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, a $50 monthly copay for Wegovy, Foundayo or the Zepbound KwikPen through December 31, 2027 [7]. See insurance and Medicare coverage.

Hospital systems

The city's large systems include Indiana University Health and Eskenazi Health. We could not confirm a medical weight loss program price at either, so call and ask what the first visit, labs and follow-ups cost and whether self-pay is accepted. Our clinic checklist lists other questions.

Plan for the long haul

In SURMOUNT-4, adults who switched from tirzepatide to placebo after 36 weeks regained 14.0% of body weight over the next year, while those who kept taking it lost another 5.5% [10]. In STEP 1, average loss on semaglutide 2.4 mg was 14.9% at 68 weeks [11]. Budget for the long term. Serious side effects to know

The Wegovy and Zepbound labels warn about pancreatitis; get care for severe stomach pain that will not go away [12] [13]. People also taking insulin or a sulfonylurea have a higher chance of low blood sugar. Trouble breathing or a swollen face can mean an allergic reaction. A boxed warning covers thyroid C-cell tumors; these drugs are not for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Stop when pregnancy is recognized. Call 911 for emergencies.
