Medical weight loss is clinician-directed treatment for obesity that may use FDA-approved medicine alongside eating and activity changes.
Salt Lake City's weight and diabetes rates
CDC's PLACES model estimates that 29.5% of adults in Salt Lake City had obesity in 2023, and 7.9% had diagnosed diabetes [4]. Countywide, the figures were 29.9% and 8.5% [5]. The city's diabetes rate is well below Dallas's 12.4% or New Orleans's 15.1% [7][8]. For many local patients, the relevant drugs are the weight-management brands, not the diabetes brands.

Utah Medicaid's weight-loss pilot has ended
Utah ran obesity-only GLP-1 coverage as a legislative pilot funded for fiscal year 2026. The Utah Medicaid prior authorization form, last updated June 1, 2026, limits weight-management coverage to reauthorizations ending June 30, 2026 [1]. Coverage continues with prior authorization for two other uses: Wegovy for cardiovascular risk reduction or MASH, and Zepbound for obstructive sleep apnea [1]. Ask your prescriber whether either applies to you. For Medicare members, the federal GLP-1 Bridge is separate; see GLP-1s and Medicare.
Choosing by what matters to you
| If you want | Option | Cash price per month | Ref |
|---|---|---|---|
| The lowest entry price | Wegovy pill 1.5 mg or Foundayo 0.8 mg | $149 | [2][3] |
| The largest average loss in a head-to-head trial | Zepbound (tirzepatide) | $299 to $449 | [9][10] |
| A weekly pen with a heart-risk approval | Wegovy pen | $349 ($199 intro for two low-dose fills) | [11][2] |
| A pill you can take with food | Foundayo | $149 to $299 | [12][3] |
In SURMOUNT-5, average loss at 72 weeks was 20.2% on tirzepatide and 13.7% on semaglutide [9]. The Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach with no more than 4 ounces of plain water, while Foundayo can be taken with or without food [13][12]. See the GLP-1 cost guide and Foundayo versus Wegovy pill.
Local health systems
University of Utah Health and Intermountain Health both serve Salt Lake City [14][15]. We did not find a published nonsurgical weight program price for either, so ask about self-pay rates and what is included. Independent clinics and online programs also prescribe; compare them with our online program comparison.
Checks before you pay
- Confirm the prescriber's Utah license through the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) [16].
- Ask whether the drug is a brand product or compounded. FDA says compounded GLP-1s are not FDA-approved [17].
- Get the full monthly cost, including dose increases and labs.
- Read the cancellation policy before prepaying.
Watch for these
The labels say to stop and call a prescriber for severe stomach pain that will not go away, because it can be pancreatitis, and for allergic reactions. Low blood sugar risk rises with insulin or sulfonylureas. All three brands carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors [18][13][12]. Call 911 in an emergency.
