Medical weight loss is prescriber-led treatment for obesity that can include FDA-approved drugs such as tirzepatide or semaglutide, nutrition support and monitoring.
New Jersey data, county by county
Our New Jersey figures come from Bergen County, so treat them as one county's picture, not the whole state. In Bergen County, CDC PLACES estimates 25.6% of adults had obesity and 9.7% had diagnosed diabetes in 2023 [4]. The county had 977,026 residents in July 2025 [5]. Readers in Princeton or Morristown should treat these as a reference point, not a local measure.

What a New Jersey program should include
- An exam and medical history before any prescription.
- Baseline labs, with a clear price for them.
- A named prescriber you can look up with the State Board of Medical Examiners [6].
- The pharmacy name, and whether the drug is brand or compounded.
- Written cancellation terms.
If a New Jersey program quotes compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide, know that these have no FDA approval and FDA does not check them for safety, effectiveness or quality. By May 31, 2026 the agency had logged 990 adverse event reports tied to compounded semaglutide and more than 730 tied to compounded tirzepatide [8].
Who pays: NJ Medicaid, Medicare, employers
KFF's January 2026 count found 13 state Medicaid programs covering obesity GLP-1s, and New Jersey was not one of them [3]. Medicare Part D members who meet the BMI and health rules can use the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, which charges $50 a month for Wegovy, Foundayo or the Zepbound KwikPen from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 [9][10]. A commercial plan that covers Zepbound pairs with Lilly's savings card for a cost as low as $25 [11]. Details: insurance and Medicare.
Before the first dose
Both labels carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in animal studies. If belly pain turns severe and will not ease, stop and call the prescriber, since it may be pancreatitis; do the same for any sign of an allergic reaction. Taking insulin or a sulfonylurea raises the risk of low blood sugar, and the labels say to stop the drug once a pregnancy is recognized [12][13]. In an emergency, call 911.
