How we check

Medical weight loss on Long Island

On Long Island, medical weight loss with a brand GLP-1 costs $149 to $449 a month for the medicine alone at the makers' cash prices, checked October 17, 2026 [1][2]. New York Medicaid does not cover these drugs for obesity [3], so most people without employer coverage pay cash.

CDC PLACES estimates adult obesity at 28.4% in Nassau and 29.7% in Suffolk in 2023, with diagnosed diabetes at about 10% in both [4][5]. There is no single Long Island figure, so we show both counties.

Hospital programs

We could not confirm the details of any Long Island hospital weight management program during this update, so we do not list one. Ask your primary care doctor for a referral to obesity medicine or endocrinology, and ask the program three things: whether it prescribes brand GLP-1s, what a self-pay visit costs, and whether you can fill the drug through a manufacturer cash program.

Rules that protect New York patients

New York treats paying or receiving fees for patient referrals, and improper fee splitting, as professional misconduct for licensees [9]. Physician licenses are issued through the State Education Department's Office of the Professions, where you can look up a prescriber [8]. Be cautious with any program that calls compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide generic or the same as a brand. Compounded versions are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [10].

Coverage options

  • Medicaid: New York does not cover GLP-1s for obesity [3].
  • Medicare Part D: the GLP-1 Bridge charges $50 a month for eligible members from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027 [11].
  • Commercial plans: if Zepbound is covered, Lilly's savings card can cut the cost to $25; if it is not, the card brings the KwikPen to $299 to $449 [12].

Warning signs

Stop and call your prescriber for severe stomach pain that will not go away, which can be pancreatitis, or for swelling, rash or trouble breathing. If you also use insulin or a sulfonylurea, watch for low blood sugar. GLP-1 drugs carry a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors in animals [13][14]. Ask about pregnancy guidance on the label. Call 911 in an emergency.
