A medical weight loss program is weight care led by a licensed prescriber that may combine FDA-approved drugs, lab checks and nutrition and activity coaching.
Tampa's weight and diabetes picture
CDC PLACES estimates that 31.9% of adults in the city of Tampa had obesity in 2023, close to the Hillsborough County figure of 31.6% [4] [5]. Diagnosed diabetes was 12.5% in both the city and county [4] [5]. For a city of 413,554 people [7], that means tens of thousands of adults who could meet the label criteria for a weight drug.

Kinds of programs you will see around Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay offers fall into three buckets: physician practices that prescribe brand drugs and bill insurance for visits, cash-pay med spas and weight clinics with a monthly fee, and online programs. A compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide offer means a product with no FDA approval that FDA does not check for safety, effectiveness or quality [8].
For online choices, see our online GLP-1 program comparison. For drug-specific pricing in this city, see tirzepatide in Tampa and semaglutide in Tampa.
National prices to measure a Tampa quote against
| Product | Monthly cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wegovy pen, first two fills at 0.25 or 0.5 mg | $199 [1] | New buyers only, through Dec 31, 2026 |
| Wegovy pen, after that | $349 [1] | Same at every strength up to 2.4 mg |
| Zepbound from LillyDirect | $299 to $449 [2] | A late refill raises the higher doses |
| Foundayo tablets from LillyDirect | $149 to $299 [9] | Set by dose |
If a Tampa clinic quotes $299 a month all-in, that number cannot cover brand Zepbound past the starting dose, since 5 mg and higher doses cost $399 or more [2]. Ask what drug you would get and from which pharmacy.
Florida rules that protect patients
- License lookup. The Florida Board of Medicine licenses physicians, and you can check a prescriber's status there [10].
- Patient brokering. Florida makes it a felony for anyone, including providers, to pay or receive kickbacks or split fees to steer patients, with listed exceptions [6]. Be wary of referral schemes that pay per sign-up.
- Pharmacies. The Florida Board of Pharmacy licenses the pharmacies that fill prescriptions, including compounders [11].
- FDA letters. Check any online brand on our FDA warning letter tracker.
Medicare and Medicaid in Florida
KFF's January 2026 list of 13 Medicaid programs covering obesity GLP-1s did not include Florida [3]. Hillsborough County residents on Part D who meet the BMI and health rules can use the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027, paying $50 a month for Wegovy, Foundayo or the Zepbound KwikPen [12] [13]. See GLP-1s and Medicare.
Across the bay and beyond: St. Petersburg, Palm Beach, Orlando and Miami. The weight loss hub covers every treatment type.
Side effects to take seriously
From the Wegovy and Zepbound labels
Stomach upset (nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation) is the most common complaint [14] [15]. Pain in the abdomen that is severe and will not ease may be pancreatitis, so stop and get seen. Anyone with MEN 2 or a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma should not take these drugs. Insulin or sulfonylurea users run a higher risk of low blood sugar [15]. A swollen face or throat, or trouble breathing, means call 911.
