Medical weight loss is obesity care directed by a licensed prescriber, often using a GLP-1 medicine such as semaglutide or tirzepatide along with diet and activity changes.

Semaglutide versus tirzepatide prices
| Medicine | Monthly price | Channel | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semaglutide: Wegovy pill | $149 / $199 / $299 by dose | NovoCare | [1] |
| Semaglutide: Wegovy pen | $349 ($199 first two low-dose fills) | NovoCare | [1] |
| Tirzepatide: Zepbound | $299 / $399 / $449 by dose | LillyDirect | [2] |
| TrumpRx starting prices | Wegovy pill $149; Wegovy pen $199; Zepbound $299 | Routes to makers | [7] |
TrumpRx is a portal, not a pharmacy; it sends buyers to the drug makers' own programs [7]. See what TrumpRx sells, semaglutide cost and tirzepatide cost.
Which drug, on average
In the SURMOUNT-5 trial, tirzepatide averaged 20.2% weight loss at 72 weeks versus 13.7% for semaglutide [8]. Semaglutide is cheaper per month at most doses, and the Wegovy pill avoids injections. Wegovy also has an FDA-approved use to cut heart-attack and stroke risk in adults with heart disease and overweight [9]. Compare in Wegovy vs Zepbound.
Finding a prescriber in the District
We could not confirm a published hospital weight management program in DC during this update, so we do not name one. Options include your primary care doctor, an obesity medicine or endocrinology referral, or a telehealth program. Check any prescriber's DC license with the DC Board of Medicine [6]. If you are offered compounded semaglutide, know that it is not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review it for safety, effectiveness or quality [10]. FDA tells telehealth firms not to call compounded drugs generic or the same as a brand [11].
Coverage in DC
- DC Medicaid: not among the programs covering GLP-1s for obesity in KFF's January 2026 review [3].
- Medicare Part D: the GLP-1 Bridge charges $50 a month for eligible members through December 31, 2027 [12].
- Federal and commercial plans: check the formulary; if Wegovy is covered, Novo's offer can bring the copay to $25 [1].
When to call
Severe stomach pain that will not go away can signal pancreatitis; stop the drug and get care. Get help for allergic reaction signs. Taking insulin or a sulfonylurea at the same time raises the chance of low blood sugar. Both drugs carry a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors in animals [9][13]. Call 911 in an emergency.
