The short answer on semaglutide

Wegovy, the semaglutide brand approved for weight management, costs $149 a month as a 1.5 mg daily pill and $349 a month as a weekly pen, and first-time pen buyers pay $199 apiece for their opening two boxes [1]. Duval County is Jacksonville

Jacksonville and Duval County are consolidated, so county health estimates describe the city closely. The city had 1,017,689 residents in July 2025 [4]. CDC PLACES estimates 34.3% of Duval adults had obesity and 12.8% had diagnosed diabetes in 2023 [3].

Florida Medicaid and Medicare

Florida Medicaid leaves obesity GLP-1s out; KFF's January 2026 roster of 13 covering states does not include it [5]. The picture is better at 65. Jacksonville's older residents, 14.9% of the city [4], may qualify for Medicare's temporary Bridge, which bills $50 per month for Wegovy in either form, Foundayo, or the Zepbound KwikPen until the end of 2027 [10][11]. See GLP-1 Medicare rules.

Compounded semaglutide offers

Some Jacksonville clinics and websites sell compounded semaglutide. FDA says it is not FDA-approved. FDA's guidance to telehealth companies says marketing should not call compounded drugs generic, the same as an approved drug, or sourced from an FDA-approved pharmacy, because FDA does not approve or license any pharmacy facility [12][13]. FDA considers semaglutide sodium and acetate salts unlawful for compounding [13]. See compounded semaglutide and our warning letter tracker.

Trial results, briefly

Semaglutide's pivotal STEP 1 study ran 68 weeks; the treated group averaged a 14.9% drop in weight, placebo 2.4% [14]. When Lilly pitted tirzepatide against it in SURMOUNT-5, tirzepatide came out ahead, 20.2% versus 13.7% [15].

Safety from the labels

Pancreatitis can show up as stubborn, severe abdominal pain; the labels say to stop the drug and phone the prescriber. Treat facial swelling or wheezing the same way. One in eight Duval adults has diabetes, and for them the combination with insulin or a sulfonylurea brings more lows. Rodent studies behind the boxed warning found thyroid C-cell tumors [16][17]. Real emergencies go to 911.

Questions people ask

What will semaglutide cost me in Jacksonville?

As Wegovy from NovoCare in mid-October 2026: tablets $149 to $299 a month, the pen $349, and $199 for each of a newcomer's first two pen boxes [1].

Do I have to use mail order, or can a Jacksonville drugstore fill Wegovy at the cash price?

Either. Novo's offer works at over 70,000 US pharmacies, and NovoCare can route an order to a CVS for pickup [2].

Will Florida Medicaid pay for Wegovy prescribed for weight?

No; Florida is absent from KFF's January 2026 list of 13 Medicaid programs that do [5].

How many Jacksonville adults have obesity?

About a third: 34.3% in Duval County, the consolidated city-county, by CDC's 2023 estimate [3].

A clinic says its compounded shot equals Wegovy. True?

No. Compounded semaglutide has no FDA approval, and FDA tells sellers not to market it as the same as an approved product [13][12].

And tirzepatide, for comparison?

Zepbound ran $299 to $449 per 28-day supply from LillyDirect in October 2026, and Walmart Pharmacy pickup is an option [7].
